The final phase of Indian Parliamentary election is nearing and Indian state Tamil Nadu goes to vote on 13th May 2009. Sensing that his party's chances to have a say in the Central Government might take a beating,  Chief minister and the chief of the ruling DMK, Dr.  M. Karunanidhi too jumped into the band of "Eelam" seekers.

Leader of opposition party AIDMK Dr. J. Jayalalitha had already promised that if gets into power; she will send Indian army to Sri Lanka and create "eelam" there.

Under pressure from its rival AIADMK and others, Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK on Wednesday night jumped into the 'eelam' bandwagon demanding a separate homeland for tamils in Sri Lanka.

In a bid to match competing rivals, DMK chief and Chief Minister Dr. M. Karunanidhi said that he had assumed the responsibilities of making all efforts that 'eelam' is created.

"We have ensured a fair quantity of relief for Sri Lankan Tamils. As a next step, they should get eelam and I assumed responsibilities of making all efforts to ensure that 'Eelam' is created", he said in an appeal to DMK workers.

Karunanidhi's remarks came after AIADMK supremo Jayalaltihaa made a dramatic turnaround from her party's known stand and pitched for a separate homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka in the election manifesto.

Later, she also said that if the Lok Sabha polls returned a "favourable" government, she would ensure the Indian army was sent to Sri Lanka to help create 'Eelam'.

AIADMK's allies in Tamil Nadu include pro-LTTE and pro-Eelam parties like MDMK and PMK.

Tamil Eelam is a sensitive and prestige issue for some tamils who believe  that white "Aryans" from Europe came and destroyed the culture and civilization of "Dravida" people in India some a couple of  millennia back. In their perspective all other Sri Lankans too are decedents of "white Aryans" who have destroyed a Dravidian Kingdom called "eelam" that existed in the present Sri Lanka, again some millennia back.

LTTE is a terrorist organization that was trying to "re-establish” an imaginary "eelam" falsely claiming that the tamils in Sri Lanka are being treated unfairly by the majority Sinhalese and engaged into a 30 year old armed terrorism that claimed thousands of lives so far.

Now Sri Lanka Government troops are on the verge of eliminating LTTE in the island nation, eelam supporters are realized that their dream for a separate country remains that - a dream.

But the political parties in Tamilnadu, India are sensationalizing this issue so that they gain the votes of the minority eelam and LTTE supporters in the coming election.

Always knew Karunanidhi to be a clown. But it came as a surprise when Jayalalitha joined the band wagon.

I was in Tamil Nadu when Karunanidhi's election campaign was ongoing in 2006 and he got elected as CM. Most educated people I spoke to disliked Karunanidhi and favoured Jayalalitha.

It does not matter who joins in the issue. But the real clowns are the voters who vote for these kind of people thinking that they honestly support the cause. They never realize that such "leeders" are always self-serving ones.

Not all countries are ready for democracy.

But Agent,

I don't think most people even in TN fall for this. I have seen comments from a TN Tamil guy in one forum and he says majority of the people there do not want to be bothered about SL issues and not part of pro-LTTE protests and riots. He says the majority know exactly what these politicians are up to.

But at the elections, ppl do have to vote for someone right?

Majority of them are not at all bothered. But any for crazy ideas there will be some supporters. Their valuable votes can make a difference especially there is not much difference between the two major parties in TN.

"But at the elections, ppl do have to vote for someone right?"

Not necessarily. Voting is not mandatory in India. So there is no compulsion that people have to vote. If there is a low turnout of voters, supporters like LTTE or eelam etc will act as a vote bank because these people will vote as a cult in a loose sense as most of the cases they will be well connected and networked. Summer is a bad season for an election - especially summer in Tamil Nadu.

These are the votes the politicians target.

In Sinhalese,

Karuna means Kindness

Nidhi means sleep or sleeping

So here, Kindness is sleeping - perhaps after he began supporting the Terrorists.

Is it so easy to betray civilians in TamilNadu? Unbeliveble and funny

It is not betrayal. Just playing with the emotions of the people. Remember, LTTEs can even mislead some International agencies through their massive propaganda.  How normal people would react, then, who does not know what is happening in SL. They tend to believe only what the politicians say - the brute majority is like that.
