Video: Washington Governor Formally Supports Gay Marriage

Washington Governor Christine Gregoire introduced legalization that would legalize same-sex marriage in her state. Gregoire said, "It is time, it is the right thing to do, and I will introduce the bill to make it happen."

In dismissing the argument that the legal premise marriage lies in procreation, Christine Gregoire said, "Do we then deny a license to heterosexual couples who choose not to have children?... To those who can’t have children or those who adopt?... To those who have children through in-vitro fertilization?

Some argue that same-sex marriage weakens the institution of marriage. Is this a role of the state? If so, it has failed miserably with a divorce rate among heterosexual couples now at about 50 percent."

Up until now, Christine Gregoire has been publicly opposed to same-sex marriage, though she supported a civil-partnership bill that is now law.

If Gregoire's bill is successful (by no means guaranteed: some Republicans would have to support the bill, as state Democrats are not united in support), Washington would be the seventh US state to legalize same-sex marriage.
