A Wall Street Journal article today exposed that Wal-Mart is using employee meetings  tout its political message, telling them not to vote for Democrats in the November election. The reason Wall-Mart is boldly doing this is the Democrats have legislation that would make it easier for workers to organize unions. The WSJ reported that according to those who attended these meetings, the message was if empoyees vote for  Barack Obama and other Democrats,  it would open them up to Union take overs.

The following is a statement from Change to Win executive director Chris Chafe in response.

"In an election season driven by the desire for change and a demand by working families for better jobs, better wages, pension security and health care for all Americans, it should come as no surprise that Wal-Mart is weighing-in heavily -- and possibly illegally -- with its employees over the choices they face this November. Wal-Mart's tactics are designed to intimidate their employees and discourage them from considering choices that would strengthen their voices on the job and bring tangible change for all American workers.

"Wal-Mart's track record is clear. When workers try to organize a union, they are met with internal intimidation campaigns and illegal firings. Where workers succeed in gaining a voice on job, their departments are eliminated or their stores are permanently closed. It should be no surprise that Wal-Mart would stretch the limits of the law in an attempt to deny their workers' rights and kill the Employee Free Choice Act. The company knows what all union workers know: workers in unions earn 29 percent higher wages on average, are 62 percent more likely to have employer health coverage, and four times more likely to have a pension.

"Shame on Wal-Mart. The industry leader's attempts to skirt the law, and use scare tactics to alter the outcome of the election is nothing less than disgraceful."

That's bold: "Attention, employees.... whatever you do, don't vote for the party that'll help you organize against us!"

I am not much on Business telling folks who to vote for.  Doesn't matter to me what party

Democrats have targeted Walmart. Why would Walmart not warn its employees that the Democrats want to bring in the mafia run unions. Look what the Unions did to the Auto Industry.

Maybe if they offered some sort of monetary compensation, then that might be ok... just joking... :)

We just got a new super Wal-Mart in the Lower Mainland today actually.

How can Walmart advise their employees who to vote for. If those employees have any common sense. They will vote Democrat. Gas prices, foreclosures, unemployment is just to name a few of the problems we are seeing as a result of a Republican being in office. People wake up!

I am not a fan of Walmart either. Why would they even think that they could tell someone who to vote for?  I would say, Walmart wake up.

Something else is falling at Walmart besides prices, its called integrity.  To tell employees how to vote as if anyone would listen to an employer trying to circumvent the organizing of unions.

As someone who stopped shopping at Wal-mart years ago, I'm not surprised.  My de facto sister-in-law worked there for a while, well after I'd bid them adieu.  The mindset is horrible there.  People actually believe that wal-mart wants the best for their employees.  It's the same as the stories you hear about the coal mines.  The bosses ask them to do illegal things and they do them, half because they want the company to succeed, the other half because they're afraid of losing what is often the last job in town.

And instead of the famed "company store" and scrip, wal-mart just gives its employees a substantial discount.  Since wal-mart sells everything that they'll ever buy on their salaries, it works out excellent for them.  The employees work for enough to pay their rent and utilities, and the rest is paid in goods.

Hey, they are not telling them to vote republican either. and I share their thoughts, why would we vote for democrats if they have shown that they would betray their own people, imagine what they would do to the coutry, I use to support democrats. but I'm done, so this year I'm not voting at all, to me there are no good candidates out there, so we are screw one way or the other. the next 4 years is everyone for themselves.
