CEBU CITY -- While he and his family of four slept in their small home in sitio Central, Barangay Biasong in Talisay City, Rogie Flores, 26, didn’t know the heavy rain that pounded on their roof would end his and his five-year-old daughter’s lives.

The rain, which started pouring at 5 a.m. Sunday, caused an eight-foot fence to fall on the Flores’ small home, burying the family in mud, dirt and rocks.

This is very sad and it's due to a problem with building regulations and low quality building products. Most of the hollow blocks are substandard even saltwater and sand with salt is used in producing them. They crumble to easily. Building methods are often very questionable and houses and walls have a very short life span.

The rented property I live in is not maintained properly by the owner, it has many building faults and I expect it only has a life span of 10 to 20 years at the most. I carry out the maintanence as I know the owner will not.
