The six-year war between forces loyal to Sudan's government and rebels in Darfur has effectively ended, the UN's military commander in the region says.
General Martin Agwai, who is leaving his post this week, said the vicious fighting of earlier years had subsided as rebel groups split into factions.
He says the region now suffers more from low-level disputes and banditry.
The UN says 300,000 people have died in Darfur, but the Sudanese government puts the figure at 10,000.
Almost three million people are said to have been displaced by the fighting.

There are currently 15 wars going on in Africa. It is proposed that the basis for the wars is the presence of foreign industries who are extracting the national resources such as timber, oil, and diamonds. These industries payments to the country's sponsoring government are unreported as well as the funding they contribute to create wars.
The wars create a distraction and as displaced citizens are robbed of their country's national resources while the coffers of the ruling governments amass fortunes for their personal use.
To prevent future atrocities and human displacement it is suggested that multinational industries make public their net taxes, fees, royalties and other payments to the governments of these countries.

Sad reality behind every war is the dirty game of resource plundering, and this is possible only by creating a proxy government in that zone, middle east is unstable because of Oil and western lust for that, and what they do to hold grip on that resource is known to the world.

In the 19th century it was rubber, and the atrocities then were not as caluculated as creating wars for the purpose of destraction, but they were none the less horrific.
There is a book called King Leopold's Ghost that tells about how King Leopold colonized African territory which he named the Belgian Congo, which is now Zaire. His reign of terror and enslavement was responsible for the deaths of from 4-8 million indigenous people. He made billions from the extraction of ore and rubber.
Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness was his response to the atrocities, enslavement, brutal punishments, and mass murders commited under the reign of King Leopold.
