DNA Test Concludes that Warren Jeffs Fathered a Child with 15-year-Old Girl

According to a DNA test, Warren Jeffs, 55-year-old leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), fathered a child with the girl he is accused of raping. DNA expert Amy Smuts said that the test was 99.99996% conclusive. The girl in question was 15 in 2005 (the time of the alleged assault); Jeffs is also accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in 2006.

Warren Jeffs, claiming to be speaking on behalf of God, wrote a grammatically-sketchy rant in which he demanded that Judge Barbara Walther be recused from the case. He was unsuccessful.

"This proceeding is unjust, against an innocent people," Jeffs said earlier today.

Special prosecutor Eric Nichols disagreed with Jeffs' characterization.

"This is not a proceeding against a people. It is against an individual, Warren Steed Jeffs, with two counts of sexual assault," Nichols said.

Last week, Warren Jeffs fired his attorneys; with seven attorneys working with him since December 2010 alone, Jeffs has now had more lawyers working on his defense than the Red Hot Chili Peppers have had guitarists. He is now representing himself.
