African-American Frederick Jermaine Carter Found Hanging From Oak Tree In Greenwood Mississippi: Suicide Or Murder? NAACP Monitoring.

The NAACP says it is monitoring the hanging death of Frederick Jermaine Carter,26, of Greenwood, Mississippi who was found dead on Friday, hanging from an Oak tree in North Greenwood, a predominantly white neighborhood of Greenwood.

News reports say the Federick Jermaine Carter has a history of mental illness and was prone to wandering off.

The stepfather, a painter, told investigators he and Carter were working in Greenwood on Wednesday when he went to get tools and Carter wandered away. "He said he'd been looking for him ever since," Banks said. The stepfather told authorities that Carter had a history of mental illness and had been to the state hospital at least once.

Police say there was no visible sign that the body had been tampered with and there was no initial physical evidence that would indicate it could be murder.

Lelfore Sheriff Ricky Banks says though it appears to be suicide he will wait until an autopsy to render a final decision.

Banks says his finding on a cause of death is not final. He is awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports. "They'll look for bruising on the body, to see if it looks like somebody might have scuffled with him or whatever," he says. "I didn't find any evidence of that."

Meanwhile, the local chapter of the NAACP say it will keep a close eye on the case.

"There are a lot of concerns there, No. 1 that this individual could not have (hanged) himself without the assistance of someone, if it's being declared a suicide," he says. "Why would someone from Sunflower County come to North Greenwood, the predominantly white housing area of Greenwood? Why would someone that far away come and hang themselves in North Greenwood by a river? That does not pass the smell test to me."

Another local elected official, state Sen. David Jordan, a Democrat, says the African-American community in Greenwood is "very much concerned."

"This is in a white wealthy area, and black people just don't go over there," he says. "There's not a single black that's talked to us who believes that he hanged himself."

I think that's very wrong to claim that you are family of the hanged (because people are hanged and pictures are hung) man and on top of that are asking for money to be sent to a PO box. That all sounds very fishy to me. And there is still no evidence that it wasn't a suicide. Until there is solid proof either way it just goes to show that people are still ignorant when it comes to the races. And trust me, if it was a lynching it would have happened in a Black neighborhood as a scare tactic. White people don't like to look out their window and see a dead black man with their coffee in the morning.

Mrs. Brenda Carter Evans appreciates all of your prayers, concern and support.  However, she is asking that you only send monetary donations to an official account, to  ensure that your donations are properly received and used for the purpose of obtaining justice for her son.  Her official site and facebook page will be set up soon.  Again, we thank you for your continued prayers as we advance the cause of justice for Fredrick.

Alexis is right about not sending money to strangers who claim to be relatives of the victim. However, to think that white people would never hang a Black man/woman in their own neighborhood is a huge error on her part. Many Blacks have been hung in Black and white neighborhoods alike. How can you say that they don't want to "look out their window and see a dead black man with their coffee in the morning" when they used to have public lynchings and raffle off their body parts as souvenirs and also make Christmas cards with Blacks hanging from trees on the front. Also, just like we can't assume that it was a homicide we can't take for granted that the local authorities are being totally honest and not covering up the truth. There should be an independent investigation and there should be members of the NOI in charge of overseeing that investigation.

Theo, I like that you are for the most part saying we should wait for results. Because this stinks for many reasons. Now have there been lynchings in the crude manner you speak of , yes of course. But on the other hand you are talking about what 80 yrs or more? When it was that brazen. Come on we all need to stop comparing this to "this in the past" and "that in the past". We need to get the facts first and then decide where to go from there. Now you and many others have said the police "may" be trying to cover up the crime, could be... but if they were why would the cop every one is calling a liar have taken the pic's and wrote up the crime like it happened. Wouldn't it of made sense since he was the 1st and only one to first get there to change the body so it did not look like a hangin, because no matter what these leaders are saying there is not a person in the U.S. that was not going to be shocked, horrified and out raged with questions about a black man being hanged ( and despite what some authors and leaders interviewed are saying, there are plenty of white's who feel that way...we are not holding some secret "glad the black guy got hung" party)?? Come on, if they are going to try and cover it up wouldn't they used a better cover?? And then to have the body in a all places the "white side of town". And the police had notified the FBI in MS before these groups got involved to double check it all.

This is all you need to know to know this was a ruthless murder... Well now we know one thing, that the KKKclan is still strong in mississippi....so all you black folks out there in the small towns betta becareful or move out...murder is one thing but getting hung by a tree.. thats crazy yo?

If you sweep this under the rug, 10 mored hanging will occur next month.  We all know, without a shadow of doubt that this guy was murdered.  This happened in Mississippi, so of course the sheriff dept isnt going to fully investigate this.  I wouldnt doubt that they had something to do with it.  This aint 1890.  Justics needs to be served.

I live in Maryland and it amazes me that I have'nt heard any of this outrages story in the media.  The only way I heard of this was by a phone conversation with someone who lives there in MS.  I'm appalled that Pitbulls, a mere animal, make national headlines. I can go anywher on the internet and find information and videos on the Michael Vicke story. We were bombarded with the news about dog fighting and them being killed by hanging and other viscious, cruel methods. I am a animal lover myself but I love my fellow humans more. I think we as a nation have a long way to go. Yes, racism and all its variations will be here for a long time but it's sad that we put animls before a human life. It should be a national outrage to all that someone anywhere would be Hung and killed. We make jokes about a life that has been taken away, wether by murder or suicide, when we should be outragged. No, we should not get like a angry mob and riot but we should be peacefully protesting in the streets of Grenwood, MS until we get the answers we deserve. We need to stop siting back and allowing our value to be reduced to less worth then a pittbull! Who will stand for justice? Who will cry aloud in the streets of Mississippi? Who will make a difference? It's not just a Black fight, it's a Human fight for justice and equality!!!!!

If anyone of you thought prejudice and hate crimes based on one's race were a thing of the past; well think again.  There you have it, the lynching of a strong black young man in the United States of America in the 21st century. This latest murder coupled with the numerous murders of black people over the centuries should be enough to awaken us out of our indifferent, complacent state.  Where is Mr. Carter's human rights?  Where is the public outrage?  Why aren't we hearing more about this story?  Why was it bottled up and labeled SUICIDE?  Where are all you civil rights, human rights activists? Why are your voices silent on this one?  It is obvious that a horrific hate crime has been committed against a black man and the racist sheriff department has labeled it a suicide without a proper, thorough investigation. The sheriff department needs to be held accountable for it's investigation or lack of (and I use the term loosely) of this murder.  Too many unanswered questions; too many he probably did or he possibly did.  Too many  loose ends.  We want answers.  We demand justice for Mr. Carter and his family.  We call upon President Obama; we call upon the Justice Department to launch a full and thorough investigation into why Mr. Carter was murdered by lynching in the state of Mississippi in the USA, in the year 2010. We want to see those hate mongers who are responsible for Mr. Carter's death brought to justice and bear the full brunt of the law. We demand justice NOW!

I am jermaine carters cousin(gabby cater) when I herd about thos and seen these pictures I was devastated. I haven't seen him since he went to church a while back and I dnt think he could have done this to himself. They say the tree is 12 feet high then how could he have done this I don't believe it and I agree with everyone and anyone who disagrees that this is suicide.

This looks to me like a murder... Lets be real -all whites and blacks dont get along.  All types of racial violence crap still happens. This all goes back to the Civil Rights movement and Emmet Till. They are all connected. AND ITS SICK.

Correction for all of you that are listening to the sheriff's lies. He has never tried to committ suicide. The sheriff stated that his medical records reported attempted suicide it is a lie i have seen this myself. Also the parents never accepted suicide from day one. Now that new evidence has come out the sheriff has recanted everything he said so what does that say about him and his truth. And to Leroy Johnson it seems funny that so many whites are raring for it to be suicide when facts show different. That tree was entirely to hig for him to climb and not have marks showing that he climbed it. He had to have wings huh. Now if you are going to talk know what you are talking about if not shut the hell up. YOU CAN SURELY TELL WHO THE WHITES ARE ON HERE.

Unfortunately, there are three sides to every story and a third of each side might ring true. However, today our society covers up many things and redresses it to establish a false sense of unity and tolerance.  We should all be concern when such things can take place and be so easily dismissed.  What most people do not realize - is when awful events occur and go unanswered or properly resolved they spill over into other areas and then very little is sacred anymore.  The interesting part of my last statement is that people of color are use to being on the short end of that stick.  So when our society totally regress and anyone can be a target - we will still keep moving forward and addressing the issues as they occur, but for you individuals who have never really experienced or understood what it feels like to be mistreated just because of who you are - it will be real interesting to see how well you fair.
