Washington D.C. call to denuclearize Pakistan
A DC-based Baluch group, supported by Americans and oppressed nationalities from Iran and Pakistan, has urged the International Atomic Energy Association and the United Nations to take steps to denuclearize Pakistan and stop it from conducting further nuclear tests in Baluchistan.
The demand was made at an event "Nuclear Tests in Baluchistan: Political and Environmental Impacts" organized by the premier Baluch advocacy and educational group, American Friends of Baluchistan, to mark the 11th anniversary of Pakistan's testing of nuclear weapons.
An A.F.B. board member Rasheed Baluch of Texas in his opening statement described May 28 as a day of mourning for nearly 20 million Baluch people all over the world
"The three tests conducted in Chagai and two tests in Kharan are the worst harm Pakistan occupation inflicted on Baluchistan," Rasheed Baluch said. "[But] I take pride in informing the world that the Baluch people have unitedly as one nation come out openly against testing of nuclear weapons. It is a shame many Pakistanis observed the day as Yom-Takbeer, or the day of Allah's greatness. This was like rubbing salt on Baluch wounds."
Two Iran-based leaders Dr. Karim Abdian, executive director of the Ahwaz Human Rights Organization, and Karim Behruz, a representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran expressed solidarity with the hapless Baluch people in Pakistan and Iran and urged the world, particularly the U.S., not to take the Iranian nuclear ambitions lightly.
Development expert Fauzia Deeba, in a detailed presentation, deplored the pitiable social conditions in Baluchistan and said the lack of clean potable water has created a havoc with the lives of the people.
"Barely point zero zero one percent of the population has access to medicare," she said.
According to eminent Pakistan nuclear physicist, Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission did not allow any environmental impact assessment of the tests in Baluchistan.
As for the Baloch, they deeply resent that the two nuclear test sites — now radioactive and out of bounds — are on their soil. Angry at being governed from Islamabad, many have taken up arms and demand that Punjab’s army get off
their backs. Many schools in Balochistan refuse to fly the Pakistani flag, the national anthem is not sung, and black flags celebrate Pakistan’s independence day. Balochistan University teems with the icons of Baloch separatism: posters of Akbar Bugti, Balaach Marri, Brahamdagh Bugti, and
‘General Sheroff’ are everywhere. The bomb was no glue.
Abdian called the testing of nuclear weapons on the lands of the indigenous people a worst form of human rights violation, while decrying the silence of the new Obama administration over human rights violations in different parts of the world, including Iran and China.
Behruz expressed concerns over the safety of the Iranian and Pakistani nuclear program and condemned Islamabad for its atrocities against the Baluch people, including the nuclear tests 11 years ago.
Abdian and Behruz both said Teheran's stance that its nuclear program was meant for peaceful purposes was a big, white lie.
In his speech in fluent Baluchi --translated by a Baluch English poet --, A.F.B. presiding council member Mohammed Ali Baloch narrated the historic facts about the annexation of Baluchistan and said his country was granted independence prior to the independence of Pakistan.
"Pakistan failed to honor even the Instruments of Accession that was signed by Baluch ruler Mir Ahmedyar Khan under duress," he added.
He narrated the history of the military operations against the Baluch people. "As I speak, a military operation continues in the tribal lands of the Marris and Bugtis," he said.
Mohammed Ali Baloch deplored that at the time of the Chagai tests people of Baluchistan were neither informed nor taken into confidence, playing a havoc with the life and well-being of fauna and flora in the region, including the nomads and their livestock.
He said he agrees with the views of veteran Baluch nationalist leader Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri; "Nawab Marri said a satisfactory resolution to Baluch grievances is impossible to find within the framework of Pakistan."
A.F.B. presiding council member Laurie Deamer, who came with her parents Ray and Wendy Deamer from Pennsylvania, to attend the meeting paid tributes to the Baluch people for their national sentiments against nuclear weapons.
The meeting was informed that protest meetings and rallies were organized by the Baluch inside Pakistan under the bayonets of the Frontier Corp and police.
Walt Landry, executive director of the Think-tank for National Self-determination deplored the tests in Baluchistan, later told a reporter he had suffered a grave personal loss because of nuclear tests.
"My brother was once posted at a testing site somewhere near Arizona and New Mexico. He died of leukemia some years later," he said.
Rasheed Baluch cited Banuk Ria Baluch who told a rally in Quetta a day earlier on Thursday that the uranium used in the testing came from the Baluch territories in the Punjab called Dera Ghazi Khan. "No civilized nation can conduct such tests on its own lands," he quoted her as saying.
Ria Baluch had also equated the Pakistani tests on Baluchistan to the U.S. dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Rasheed Baluch said the nuclear tests have given rise to an alarming ratio of cancer cases with at least one in every three nomads suffering from cancer and also resulted in severe drought in the area.
Rasheed Baluch also cited Professor Sabah Dashtyari, who at the rally in Quetta had urged Baluch mothers to teach their children from an early age what harm Pakistan had done to their country so that each and everyone of them may grow up hating nuclear tests and foreign occupation.
A.F.B. presiding council member Waja Karim Bakhsh of Atlantic City recalled that last year when the Baluch observed the day of mourning Waja Ghulam Mohammed Baloch of the Baluchistan National Movement led a protest rally in Karachi and along with Wahab Baloch was picked up by the Pakistani intelligence services and freed after being tortured.
He said on April 3 this year Ghulam Mohammed Baluch, 45, and two other political activists Munir Baloch, 50, and Sher Moahmmed Baloch, 35, were abducted by the Inter Services Intelligence shot in the head and their bodies dropped from a military helicopter outside the town of Turbat.
Ghulam Mohammed Baloch was against the testing of nuclear weapons. "He wanted a world without nuclear weapons. His "crime" was he wanted pace, justice and freedom for the Baluch people. Those who killed him should know there are many Ghulam Mohammed Balochs in North America and Europe."
For the first time in history both the United States and the United Nations condemned the killing of the three Baluch activists.
Rasheed Baluch expressed optimism every American who wants an end to nuclear arms will support the mission of the American Friends of Baluchistan and help us realize the dream of Ghulam Mohammed Baloch for an independent Baluchistan, free of nuclear weapons.
"Many a time in world history, dreams are realized long after the dreamers are gone," Rasheed Baloch said.
Sher Mohammed Baloch, originally a seaman who now a naturalized American and lives in Atlantic City, said the Baluch in North America can play a valuable role in informing the world about the dangers of nuclear arms as they themselves have fallen victims to nuclear radiation.
In his concluding remarks, Robert Selle, one of the founders and presiding council member of the American Friends of Baluchistan expressed concern over the situation in Pakistan and demanded the right of nations to self determination for the people of Baluchistan.
He asked U.S. lawmakers to ensure that Baluchistan should get its share from the U.S. funds being provided to Pakistan if Washington D.C. was sincere in peace in the region.
Meanwhile, the American Friends of Baluchistan is seeking to work closely with U.S. environmental groups, including the premier Alliance for Nuclear Accountability, and is in touch with the organization's executive director Nicholas Roth.
The A.F.B. shares Roth's passion for a nuclear-free world.
Founded in fall 2006, two of the 10-point agenda of the A.F.B. pertains to nuclear testing.
The A.F.B believes in end the nuclear programs of both Pakistan and Iran. "Nuclear testing on the soil of Balochistan as practiced by Pakistan is against the wishes of its people and must stop," the non-profit group's mission statement says.
The A.F.B. further demands, "At the least, the Chagai nuclear test range should be opened for international inspections. But inspections should not diminish the goal of making the entire region a nuclear free area."
Also A.F.B. presiding council member Rasheed Baluch will establish contacts with other Baluch individuals and groups for the formation of a Baluch Action Committee to work on an issue to issue basis with them, including winding up Pakistan's nuclear test ranges in Chagai and Kharan.
Rasheed Baluch will also be in touch with Ahwazis, Azeris, Kurds, and Turkmens from Iran, and Pashtuns, Sindhis and Seraikis from Pakistan to form alliances with them and to take collective action on environmental and political issues as and when needed.

I have written in one of my earlier write ups that the real objectives of USA to invade and occupy Afghanistan were not to punish the Taliban for not handing over Osama bin Laden and to destroy the so-called terror network of Al-Qaeda but to create safe and reliable routes to transport energy resources of Central Asian Republics (CAR) to its homeland. Its other regional objectives included keeping a watch on Russia and Iran, containment of China, making India a bulwark against China and ascendant power of South Asia, a key player in Afghan affairs and reducing Pakistan to a satellite of India after its denuclearization. For the realization of its primary objective, it had to ensure that Balochistan provided the desired energy corridor through Gwadar and Pasni. India too never desired Pakistan to become self sufficient economically with the assistance of Chinese by making use of Gwadar Port for import/export with CAR. Entry of China in the Indian Ocean through the shortest route did not suit strategic interests of USA and India. Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline was another sore point which had to be prevented and Iran veered towards Afghanistan by providing road connection with Chahbahar Port to ensure isolation of Pakistan.
Covert operations by CIA and RAW in Balochistan began in January 2002 and in three years the interior was sufficiently subverted; necessary infrastructure put in place in the form of contacts, 58 training camps, provision of all sorts of arms and ammunition, sophisticated communication system and huge funds. Sui-Bugti area was picked up for subversion because of its accessibility from Indo-Pak border through Reti-Rahimyar Khan sector and Kohlu-Kahan area because of a very inhospitable terrain. Bugtis and Marris traditionally antagonistic to each other were wedded for the attainment of stated objectives. Each training camp had 300-500 students. Dissident Sardars of Bugti, Marri and Mengal tribes together with Baloch nationalist parties and quislings agreed to play their game in return for power and material benefits. Motivational nodes suggested to Baloch leaders to win over sympathies of Balochis revolved around economic and political deprivation, Punjab domination and Baloch nationalism. The route to bring in munitions was from Shahgarh-Kishangarh (5 km from eastern border)-Ubaro, Kashmore-Sui-Dera Bugti-Kahan. Afghanistan route via Muslim Bagh and Iran route via Zahidan where an Indian consulate was set up were also used for covert operations. The front was lit up in January 2005 through Dr Shazia rape case, with Nawab Akbar Bugti taking the lead role.
A shady outfit Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) created by KGB in the 1980s went into oblivion once USSR fragmented in 1991.. It was reactivated by CIA and RAW once Balochistan flared up. The main gas supply routes Sui-Kashmor-Uchch-Multan and Sui-Kashmor-Sukkhar being only 45 km away from border with India were within turnaround radius of RAW saboteurs to blast them at will. The period from 2005 to 2007 saw worst form of terrorist activities. Hardly a day passed when there was no act of sabotage. Gas pipelines, railway lines, electric transmitters, military convoys, police stations were targeted with venom. Quetta too came under repeated bomb and rocket attacks. After a brief spell of army action, the Frontier Corps managed to cope up with the security situation at its own and has kept the army troops free of counter insurgency operations. Things have become relatively quiet after security forces succeeded in destroying most of training camps and keeping a check on supply lines. However, RAW and CIA sponsored subversive activities are continuing unabated.
Nawab Akbar Bugti who led the insurgency from a mountain cave got killed in August 2007 when the cave collapsed because of artillery shelling. He was turned into a hero after his death and became the chief motivating factor for Baloch nationalism which has now peaked and Baloch nationalists are talking of separation without any inhibitions. RAW stepped up its activities in Balochistan from mid 2007 in line with the chalked out plan and increased the discretionary budget of RAW infested Indian consulates in Kandahar, Jalalabad and in Zahidan. Sardar Attaullah Mengal who was in self imposed exile was asked to return to Kohlu to lend strength to the Bugtis and Marris and also to keep a check on Balach Marri who was heading the BLA. After the death of Balach in end 2007 which caused a temporary setback to his mentors, late Nawab Bugti’s grandson Brahamdagh Bugti was put in his place. He is stationed in Kabul and is pawn of foreign agencies. The BLA H.Q. duly patronized by the two agencies as well as RAM is coordinating sabotage and subversion in Balochistan from Kandahar.
UNHCR representative John Solecki was abducted from Quetta in early 2009 by BLA members on the directions of Brahamdagh Bugti at a time when UN Chairman was about to visit Islamabad. The abduction was aimed at seeking UN intervention in Balochistan affairs and to exert pressure on Pak government. His release in last April was meant to show softer side of BLA to UN. Brahamdagh stated that the BLA was not a terrorist outfit as alleged but was waging a freedom struggle. Soon after, three Baloch nationalist leaders were found brutally murdered in Turbat under mysterious circumstances. The blame was promptly put on local agencies. Baloch leaders upped the ante and as many as 14 non-locals were gunned down in Quetta. BLA terrorists helped by CIA and RAW were behind the murder of Baloch leaders who had played a key role in the release of Solecki. These Baloch leaders were on the verge of spilling beans about the role of BLA and its mentors. They were murdered to prevent the leakage, destabilize Balochistan, stoke Baloch nationalism and step up the bogey of independent Balochistan. Interior Minister Rehman Malik for the first time forthrightly exposed the role of RAW and dissident elements among the Baloch talking of separation. He however considered it prudent not to name other foreign agencies actively involved in that province to achieve their commercial interests. Non-locals in Balochistan are feeling unsafe and a large number have migrated to Punjab. The MQM supports the cause of Baloch in Balochistan.
Notwithstanding the streaks of separatism seen among dissident Baloch Sardars and Baloch nationalists, the fact of the matter is that the Sardari system has remained the bane of Balochistan and has been a serious impediment in the way of development of the province. This is notwithstanding the perverse role of rulers who cannot be absolved of their failure to redress political and economic grievances of the people of Balochistan. The Baloch Sardars have a history of keeping their people deprived of education and basic amenities of life and have all along treated them as serfs. Greater portion of funds allocated for development works are eaten up by them. They also have a history of selling their loyalties to foreign masters in return for material benefits. Among them Sardars of Marri and Mengal tribes have all along been troublesome and looked towards outside powers for help. Nawab Bugti had always sided with the government and was despised by the people of Balochistan. He was led up the garden path by CIA and RAW and he fell in their trap. Apart from the role of few Baloch Sardars and camp followers, the ordinary Baloch are highly patriotic and honorable. Very big numbers are settled in urban and rural Sindh, in Punjab and in NWFP. There is heavy induction of Baloch in the armed forces particularly in the army. No trace of separatist tendencies is found in them. It is however unfortunate that our rulers instead of establishing communication with them are once again trying to woo the Sardars and are talking of reviving Sardari system that was abolished by Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto in 1973. This trend should be reversed.

Pakistan with nuclear arms is the single biggest threat to humanity.

It seems like a terrible thing that is happening there and it is a shame that it doesn't get the Worlds attention that it deserves.
Sadly I cannot see Pakistan giving up nuclear weapons as long as India has them.

Pakistan will use these nuclear weapons any time for the purpose of Jehad, unless deter by the world power. Altough all nuks in the world pose a great danger for humanity and world peace, but I think Indian nuks are not as much an imminenet threat as Pakistani nuks, since india has no beligerent design in the region. Pakistan's nuclear weapons are imminent threat to the securities of the regional countries and threat to humanity as well. Pakistani Nuks could fall in the hands of Taliban and Alqaeda in a foreseable future, due to immense support from religious parties and within army itelligence. Pakistan's army has been supporting and mentoring these radical religious element for its ulterior motives for long time. Further, if the religious parties capture the power in Pakistan with the help of notorious ISI, then what you think will happen? There is a fair chance of extremist religious parties to capture the power in Pakistan.

Ahmar,
Congrate for arranging this august seminar in Washington D.C. The participation was significant and presentations were excellent. If we all continue with concerted efforts to educate the world pertaining to Paki oppression against its' nationalities in collaboration with other oppressed communities in Washington DC, I firmly believe that pakistan will collaps very soon. The world should understand that the possesion of nuks in the hands of Paki Jehadist army and its' notorious ISI, there is a imminent danger to the regional countries securities. The world should come forward to denuclarize and clean pakistan from its' nuclear arsenals, in order to give the peace a chance.

I think that India needs to be denuclearized as well. Oh lets go the whole hog and every one else including USA.
at 16:06 on May 31st, 2009
Until that goal is achieved, should Pakistan and its B and C teams -- Al Qaeda and Taliban-- also allowed to keep nuclear weapons?

You are a liar thats what you are Mr Masti (khan)! Everyone knows Pakistan has wiped out the Taliban from Swat and will continue to do so everywhere else and has suffered huge influx of immigrants and losses to the army as a result of the operation! No one except the Pakistani army has the control of the Nuclear assets.

Who said they should, I didn't
What I am saying between the lines is that USA of whom you seemingly are pleading too is just as at fault as anyone else in having such dreadful weapons of mass destruction.
Why should India not be targeted as they are the main reason for Pakistan drive to have such a dreadful weapon.
Al Quaeda and the Taliban as far as I can tell do not have any nuclear weapons. The reason for the Taliban being in Pakistan is nothing to do with Pakistan's nuclear weapon. Its to do with setting up a base due to the war in Afghanistan.
