The primary architectural structure in Washington Square Park, the Arch and the park itself has quite an interesting, and macabre history...

Did you know that there are over 20,000 dead buried underneath WSP? They were the victims of Cholera and/or Yellow Fever in the early days of NYC. There are no memorials or markers at all. Remind anyone of "Poltergeist"?

Did you know that the architect that designed the Arch, Stanford White, was murdered at Madison Square Garden in front of many people? Furthermore, the murderer, Harry Kendall Thaw, successfully played the insanity defense in what was termed then as the "Trial of the Century".

Nearby is the "Hanging Elm", where it is reported that many a felon met their fate. Any unclaimed bodies were supposedly buried underneath the tree.
