We barely cared before, and now must care barely again--will that be the headline of Obama's new piece for Newsweek?

“President Barack Obama will write the cover story for next week's Newsweek magazine.

The Wall Street Journal's Russell Adams reports that Newsweek editor Jon Meacham asked Obama's senior advisor if the President would write for the magazine, and he agreed.

The magazine will hit newsstands on Monday.

When Newsweek unveiled its redesign in May 2009, the magazine also turned to Obama; Meacham interviewed Obama for that issue.”

I think the President has more to do than to bailout Newsweek. Haiti is a disaster as it was even before the earthquake. It has been a poor and failing state for a long time as this was a dumping ground for slaves, and the place never advanced beyond that.

Why?

People need government and they need an economy. In today’s world, people must provide something that is perceived by others to be superior and highly valued.

Haiti, the geography can be beautiful. It can become a tourist destination as today many cruise lines stop on the edges – look but do not touch. Well to do countries give the place lip service this way – look but do not touch.

What will President Obama say or do that President Bill Clinton did not?

How about the nation that adjoins Haiti? Is the neighbor any better off? Their history is a tug of war, though the Dominican Republic is a little better off. There are times when geographic alignment is better served by political collaboration. This is surely an instance.

If the USA weren’t so strung out on oil and the Middle East, becoming an adopting parent might be a good idea, though that is the problem. We are too strung out.

The Haiti calamity is receiving America's attention with priority, as it should. The circumstance highlights the American dilemma -- we're too strung out. We would be better served addressing the needs of nations closest to home--Mexico and southward than far flung in the Middle East.

If bankers donated just 10% of bonuses to Haiti, $4.7 billion would go to a country in need
