Today -- the ninth day of the ninth month of the year two thousand and nine (i.e. 9/9/09) is proving to be a popular day among couples around the world. A wave of weddings swarmed the world today: from China to North America, every continent had its share of lovers eager to wed on the mystical 09/09/09.

So, here is a round-down of today’s marriage mania by country:

China

Apparently, in Mandarin number “nine” (jiu) stands for “longevity.” Hence, the motivation to get married on 09/09/09 and receive a triple share of “forever-ness” was substantial among Chinese couples. And, although September is considered to be the ominous Hungry Ghost Month, during which Chinese people tend to avoid moving out and getting married, the couples that wedded today did not seem to mind.

"I believe that getting married is a lifetime commitment, and so I would like it to be an auspicious date like today 09/09/09. It means forever and we hope we can be together as long as we live."

Around 7,700 couples were expected to tie the knot in Shanghai alone today, surpassing the 7,200 couples that got married on 08/08/08 last year. In Beijing, nearly 19,000 couples registered to wed.

Singapore

366 couples got married in Singapore.

Registry of Marriages (ROM) records show that 366 couples registered to marry on Wednesday, compared to the daily average of 64 couples on a normal day.

Germany

In Munich the officials are short staffed and had to add more workers to meet the demand. The time for marriage registration is shortened to 15 minutes aiming to accommodate to all young newly-formed families.

Russia

1036 weddings were registered on 09/09/09 in Moscow alone, triple the daily average.

Israel

Israel is celebrating in style by introducing toilet paper wedding gowns on this special day; in the photos, the dresses look gorgeous. I had trouble believing that they were made out of toilet paper of all things. The dresses were an advertising campaign for the local toilet paper company to mark 09/09/09.
In celebration of today’s unique date -- 9/9/09, some of Israel’s leading designers created special wedding gowns made out of toilet paper. Full disclosure -- a toilet paper company asked them to do it.

US

A 99 cents store in Hollywood, LA, offered a special promotion to the wedding couples -- nine couples will be married for the cost of 99 cents per couple on 09/09/09.

according to KNBC, the company "will send the couples off in a limousine, with $99.99 in cash, and take them to an undisclosed 'famous romantic Los Angeles' spot. All nine couples who get married in the store at 5270 Sunset Blvd. will get a free night's stay, including dinner, at the Hotel Angeleno in Brentwood."

Nice couples will wed at Madame Tussauds wax museum in LA at 9:09 AM, and 99 other couples will wait until 9:09 PM to wed on the deck of the Stratosphere Tower, for just $99.

Las Vegas is abuzz with weddings -- today is expected to be one the busiest days of the year for the city.
