West Africa: The Coup in Guinea
For now the coup leaders seem to
have taken power. The former government
has given up. We can only hope the new
Army rulers will do what is best for
the country.
This year alone Mauritania, Guinea Bissau and lately Guinea Conakry have all fell under the jackboot of brass button boys. The Guinea Conakry coup occurred a few days ago in the aftermath of the death of Lansana Conte, its strongman who has been in power since 1984 on the death of the former president Sekou Toure.
These coups are occurring in spite of the African Union's decision not to have anything to do anymore with military governments on the continent. But so far once they come to power the AU has been unable to convince them to relinquish power and return to their traditional role.

158 balanced report, good to mention african sources. The AU African Union I don't give to much at the moment on this opinion.
Muammar al-Gaddafi AU
The leader of the AU African Union is Gaddafi, who put himself in power by a coup d'etat
Muammar al-Gaddafi,
On September 1, 1969, a small group of military officers led by Gaddafi staged a bloodless coup d'état against King Idris I, while he was in Kammena Vourla, a Greek resort, for medical treatment.

Thanks.
The AU is much like the UN, but poorer. They will do little if anything.
Gaddafi has been in power nearly 40 years. Maybe he forgot how he became leader.
Good comment.
