Westboro Church says it will protest at Flight 3407 Memorials
Anti-gay extremists from Westboro Church (WBC), Topeka, Kansas, are planning to protest in the Buffalo, NY area on Sunday February 22nd.
Members of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., who are known for picketing the funerals of U.S. troops, are planing to protest two memorial services planned for the victims of Flight 3407, the commuter plane that crashed near Buffalo.
The group plans to picket a morning community prayer service at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clarence Center, and an afternoon memorial service for Alison Des Forges at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Buffalo. Both services are scheduled to take place Sunday.
Westboro Baptist Church is known for its anti-gay message and its picketing of funerals for members of the armed services killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The controversial church says God is punishing America because of what church members consider the nation's permissive attitude toward gays and lesbians.

Good post. I think reason behind these protest are not very convincing?
at 19:44 on February 17th, 2009
This is awful. Why don't they just get a life?
This is the same group that were protesting at Tim McLean's funeral, the young guy that was beheaded. I believe they were stopped at the border.

Sanjay Jha, it is my opinion that anyone who could be convinced by this extremist [hate] group is lacking both in reason and human decency. Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation!

This group was rumoured to have planned a foray into British Columbia at one point but never showed.

Blue Crush far beyond reason as it is for me, this is their life: criss-crossing the country for the past 18 years, spreading their messages of hate, and under the guise of religion.

mtammas, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation! Are you referring to the Eight Avalanche Victims in Fernie, BC?

That is really sick - think of their poor families who have to endure that. What is wrong with them?
at 20:25 on February 17th, 2009
Amy, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation! Please refer to my comments above for the answer to: "What is wrong with them?"

Yes, Rhonda. This group doesn't like Canada's 'tolerant' society.
at 22:53 on February 17th, 2009
You are very welcome, Cypresso! I think it goes beyond anti-gay sentiment. If you read the WBC News Release at the link, I think you too will understand what I mean. Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation!

As an original Kansan I'd just like to say...Sorry. Also...I've seen these people before they came to my college campus and they have small children holding their signs. It is frightening that they exist, that they dont actually live in the hills somewhere, etc.
Basically they're just wacked out malignantly narcissistic hillbilies some of whom have law degrees.
Lawrence, Kansas actually has a gay marriage registry (i think since 2007). They passed a gay rights ordiance to prohibit discrimination years ago. It is the bastion of civil liberties in all of Kansas and maybe the midwest (apart from Denver). They also recently reduced marijuana possession of up to an oz to only a fine so as not to threaten the funding of KU students. For a while Lawrence had its own currency thanks to Boog Highberger who was also the mayor for a while. He established a dadaism day or something.
There are many, many interesting facts about this area: it was on the underground railroad, William S. Burroughs lived there until he died, Langston Hughes lived in Lawrence for a while.
Just want you all to know there's a bright spot in the midst of it all. Kansas has Sebellius, too, who is pro-choice, etc.
P.S. Did anyone see the Michael Moore Tv show years ago where they tracked Phelps down in a big pink bus and did YMCA and things like that to taunt him?
Oh. and P.S. lets not forget Brown Vs. Board of Education which desegregated schools that came out of Topeka!
update II: oh and lets not forget barack obama's mommy :)

Fripouille, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. My answer will have to be over a series of comment boxes because I am not yet competent to reference multiple sites in the comment area:)
The Westboro Baptist Church is a Hate Group monitored by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Westboro Baptist Church protests violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 20(2), which states:
"2. Any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law."
The United States is bound by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
at 10:57 on February 18th, 2009
Why then is the Westboro Baptist Church allowed to continue its advocacy of hate?
Groups such as the NYCLU protect hate speech. John Curr III, director of the Western Regional Office of the NYCLU in Buffalo, New York, in an article titled "Church signs spur dialogue" states:
"...that this situation should be one that can be used to open up dialogue within the community.
He said that nobody should tell the church what it can and cannot put up on its signs, even if people object to it.
“These are the kinds of institutions we need to protect,” Curr said. “No one should take any sanction against a congregation.”
The sign read:
On one side of the sign there were phrases like “God loves homosexuals.” The other side of the sign read that homosexuality “destroyed a nation,” “spreads disease” and “is an abomination to God."

Hi, everyone! I want to apologize for my absence and thank everyone who read, commented on, and/or recommended this story. Every action is deeply appreciated!
I attended both protests today (see related story on NowPublic: Kansas-based hate group forced out in Flight 3407 protest), and I hope to have photographs of the protests up on NowPublic tomorrow.
Thanks again!

Thank you, mtammas! I don't think this group likes anyone who does not agree with (and what I believe to be) their profoundly sick interpretation of the Holy Bible.
at 22:10 on February 17th, 2009
What do the victims have to do with any of this?
at 22:18 on February 17th, 2009
Paschen, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. The victims have nothing at all to do with this except for what exists in the minds of the members of the Westboro Church. You can read the WBC News Release at the link I provided above to get a better idea of what I mean.

So a pro traditional values group who supports morality and truth is protesting a downed aircraft? Weird!
at 23:07 on February 17th, 2009
youngturk, thank you for reading and commenting. I wouldn't go so far as to say however that this is a "pro traditional values group who supports morality and truth...". They don't have a clue as far as I am concerned. If you read the WBC News Release at the link, I think you too will understand what I mean.

Bunch of idiots.
Don't these people realise that in many other countries they would be arrested and put into prison?!! The permissiveness they so despise is the same permissiveness that allows them to be able to organise their disgusting demonstrations in the first place...
at 11:01 on February 18th, 2009
Thanks Rhonda. Moreover no-one can hide behind the 'National law comes first" argument, because Article 2 of that same Covenant states:
"..each State Party to the present Covenant undertakes to take the necessary steps, in accordance with its constitutional processes and with the provisions of the present Covenant, to adopt such laws or other measures as may be necessary to give effect to the rights recognized in the present Covenant".
(My highlight).

lefty_liberated, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. There is no need to apologize and, even though I thank you for the Kansas highlights, another truth is:
According to an Intelligence Report published in the Spring of 2001 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, "homo-sexual-hater Fred Phelps' lawsuits and heavy-handed tactics has 'bullied into submission' an entire Kansas City." In fact, Topeka is "A City Held Hostage".
It's a very interesting read!
at 18:44 on February 18th, 2009
who_me, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation! Thank you for sharing your personal story and learning experience as well.
However, it appears that the Westboro Baptist Church protests violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 20(2), which states:
"2. Any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law."
The United States is bound by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and seemingly does nothing to protect LGBT citizens from such advocacy groups.
Also, see Fripouille's comment as well as the remainder of my comment to Fripouille related to one example of why this hate group is allowed to continue. It happened right here in my home city of North Tonawanda, New York. John Curr III, director of the NYCLU's Western Regional Office, Buffalo, NY, took a stand on behalf of The First Baptist Church, literally around the corner from our home, and yards from Michael's high school, City of North Tonawanda School District, North Tonawanda Senior High School, in support of speech clearly designed to incite.
You may also want to read the story at the link "A City Held Hostage" that I directed lefty-liberated too (above). It is a very enlightening read!

I just learned this news. And from what I hear the angels of action AKA angels of peace will be there to block the families view of the protest.
This really saddens me that a "man" of God could and is acting in such a manor!
at 09:14 on February 21st, 2009
Tiffany albertson (not verified), thank you for reading and commenting. You heard correctly and I want to thank you for the information provided and that I researched for this story, currently on NowPublic, "Police Designate Protest Area for "God Hates Fags" Group". In reading the story you will learn, among other things, that BuffaloPundit is discouraging participation in "Angel Action" for the reason it will create a spectacle within a spectacle.
Thanks again!
