Michael Davey, a Weymouth police officer, was hit by an elderly driver while directing traffic on the morning of August 25.

The Weymouth police officer was hit by 79-year-old Ronald Gale of Weymouth, Massachusetts.

He was directing traffic at a utility work site when Gale drove his Mazda pick-up through a stop sign and hit a Toyota Camry and kept going slamming Davey against a utility truck and finally pinning him under his pick-up, authorities said.

Gale faces many charges, including negligent homicide, failure to stop at a stop sign, and speeding. Gale's license has been suspended.

Michael Davey was 34-years-old and had 3 children. The Weymouth police officer also served in Iraq. They Weymouth police headquarters honored Davey by raising flags at half-stuff.

"We've lost truly a guardian of our safety," said [Norfolk District Attorney William] Keating. "People like that are not commonplace."

One more (unfortunate) reason elderly people need to be retested. They are just as bad as drunk drivers. It is a proven fact as people age the reflexes are slower, they do not hear or see as well. They don't want to "give up their independence",well when it comes to killing people because of their narrow mindedness,SOMETHING needs to be done! My mom refused to stop driving and she was a BIG hazard. My brother and I STOLE her car!We had to,we had no ther choice!I think family members should be a little more proactive in helping to save lives!!!

Wow - You mean that a blue uniform, shiny badge, and gun doesn't magically repel oncoming traffic? I thought that is why we pay them 4X what a flag man would make to work on these details. I wonder if a flag man would have done a better job...

Are you kidding me Alice Smith???  A man DIED.  He will never see his family again and you're on a blog commenting about whether or not he did his job effectively?  How LOW.  You have no shame coming on here and blasting someone and hiding behind a fake name.  Oh... and by the way... did you know in Boston there's a job using flaggers that charge the city $53.10 an hour for a flagger??  Nope... bet not.  I honestly hope you don't ever need the police some day... because that day will be a humbling experience for you to see that that man or woman in blue would be willing to check your house at 2AM when you heard a noise downstairs or lock lips with your newborn child or elderly parent in an effort to save their life... but all you see is a blue uniform, a shiny badge and a gun... NOT THE PERSON.

Wow - The instead of seeing the story for what it was, a tragic accident you decided it would be funny to poke fun at the pay grade of a police officer vs the construction flagger. Instead of taking up possible air that I could be breathing, how about you take your waste of skin, pathetic excuse of an existence over to the Weymouth Police station on Winter st. in Weymouth, Ma. and tell the sergeant at the front desk what you just posted on this webpage. Or here's a better idea. Volunteer for flagging duty on the corner of West st. and Front st. in that same town for about 4 hours. I'll send flowers when you get run down for being a jackass.

A life was lost, how inconsiderate can you be?I'm sorry you have some burning hatred for police officers who risk their lives to prevent their communities but all that aside, he was a husband, a father, a son, and a brother. Try to have a little bit more respect for someone who passes away despite the circumstances, it's called common courtsey.

I am completely shocked at what a pathetic lowlife you are, Alice.  How disgusting of a person are you to say that about someone who gave his life to protect your sorry ass!  You have no respect whatsoever for this man's family.  You are an embarrassment to society, and to this town.  Officer Davey was a son, a brother, and a husband. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Officer Davey, and also to his fellow police brothers.  I cannot even imagine what they must be feeling.  ....As for you, Alice, karma is a bitch...

Alice obviously said that to get attention...so lets give attention where it is really due, to the brave man who risked his life every day. My thoughts are with his family. I lost my father at a young age, and I know that it took a lot of love and support to get through the rough times. So let's focus on supporting the family....

I have to say that Alice although you are the bottom of the toilet water once I am done shitting, Mike Was a very close and dear friend of mine as was his wife and kids. He was the godfather to my daughter as I was the godfather to his son. No words can express the type of man he was. He was one of a kind and not a soul can give that back to his beautiful family. They will forever be torn by this accident. Scumbags like you are just cowards hiding behind a blog. If you are not then right the wrong you have done and donate money to his kids fundraiser being held at the Weymouth Elks on November 8th, 2009. I would however reccomend for your own safety you send it as an anonymous donation.

CYNTHIA FULTI

MY NAME IS CYNTHIA I AM A MBTA BUS DRIVER FROM THE LYNN AREA, MY FRIEND ARYLENE AND MYSELF VOLUNTEERED TO DRIVE THE BUS FOR THE WEYMOUTH POLICE AND FIRE DEPT. FOR OFFICER DAVEY'S FUNERAL. WE DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THIS, WE DIDN'T GET PAID, WE DIDN'T KNOW THE MAN NOR HIS FAMILY, BUT HE WAS A VETERAN, HE WAS A POLICE OFFICER, HE WAS A HUSBAND, A FATHER, A BROTHER, A SON, AND SOMEONE I COULD COUNT ON TO PROTECT ME IF I EVER NEEDED A POLICE OFFICERS HELP.  IT WAS SUCH A HONOR, AND A PRIVILEDGE TO HAVE BEEN A SMALL PART OF SAYING "THANK YOU OFFICER DAVEY" AND EVERYONE WHO HAS SERVED THEIR COUNTRY, SO THAT WE  CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING WE ARE SAFE. AND FOR COMING HOME AND  PROTECTING US EVEN FURTHER BY BECOMING A POLICE OFFICER.  TO HIS FAMILY MY HEARTFELT SYMPATHY, TO THE PEOPLE OF WEYMOUTH MY HEARTFELT SYMPATHY, YOU HAVE LOST A PERSON WHO PROTECTED YOU, AND TO OUR SOCIETY WHO WILL FIND IT HARD TO REPLACE HIM.  IF WE KEEP LOSING MEN LIKE HIM WE ARE IN BIGGER TROUBLE THEN JUST THE ECONMY. GOD BLESS YOU DAVEY FAMILY AND JUST A SMALL "THANK YOU" BACK TO THE WEYMOUTH POLICE AND FIRE DEPT FOR THE HONOR OF DRIVING YOU SATURDAY MORNING. P.S. I WOULDN'T WASTE THE ENERGY OF TYPING A COMMENT TO ALICE SHE IS ENJOYING EVERYTHING  YOU WRITE, SHE IS A SICK PERSON AND A MINORITY.

Dear Alice Smith, My name is Kenneth Peters a life long resident of the town of Weymouth and proud of it. I have to agree with Chris Abington.  I will surely be thinking of you everytime I take a shit. You really are the bottom of the barrel. You have a lot of balls speaking that way about the people who protect us and our families everyday. I hope you remember your comment next time you need the Police for something, or better yet I hope the police officer on the scene remembers your comment when he or she shows up.
