New Delhi/ Dehradun: The young MBA graduate who was shot dead by the Uttarakhand Police in Dehradun on Friday evening had 26 injury marks on his body, an autopsy report has revealed.
The autopsy report will strengthen allegations that Ranbir Singh, 24, was shot dead by the police in a fake encounter. The report says there were injury marks on Singh’s chest and abdomen, indicating a possible confrontation between him and the police.
According to the report, Singh died of a firearm injury. The cause of death has been given as shock and haemorrhage due to injury to vital organs like the liver, kidney and lungs. Two bullets were extracted from his body though the total number of bullets fired is still not known.
Dr Ajit Gairola, the doctor who conducted the autopsy, said Singh had gunshot and “non-dangerous” injuries on his body.“He had around 26-27 injuries. The cause of death was shock and haemorrhage due to injury to vital organs like lungs, liver and spleen. Some are certainly gunshot injuries. Some of the injuries are abrasions,” said Dr Gairola, Senior Medical Officer at the Dehradun Hospital.
Singh was cremated in his hometown Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. His family repeated their allegation that the Uttarkhand Police had killed him in a staged encounter. “This is a case of murder. The (injury) marks on his bodies suggest that he has been killed,” said Singh’s father Ravinder.
Singh was in Dehradun on Friday to take up a job with a financial firm. He travelling with his two friends on a motorcycle when the police stopped him in a place called Dalanwala in the town.
Police allege the three men argued with a constable who asked them to stop and then fled after snatching his service revolver. Police shot dead Singh at another checkpoint near a forest but his two friends escaped.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police Subhash Joshi on Saturday said that Singh was shot dead by the police after he and the two men with him refused to surrender and fired shots.
"Since three of them were riding on a bike bearing a Haryana registration number, they were stopped by a policeman. Instead of cooperating, they started fighting with him.
"Following a scuffle, they even went to the extent of speeding away after snatching the policeman's service revolver, which led the police to sound an alert across the city. About an hour and half later, when a police party spotted them in one of the bylanes, they were asked to surrender. But they again opened fire following which the police retaliated,” said Joshi.
Singh’s family rejected the allegation and said he had no criminal record and was not a law-breaker.

Sources in the Uttarakhand government told CNN-IBN that the police might have shot Singh after mistaking him for a criminal
