This story post about a suspicious car near the Pentagon on Washington Boulevard amounts to nothing. Yet, what about the shots fired at the Pentagon and Marine Corps recruiting sites last year?

Apparently people just go around Washington shooting randomly as a common course of behavior.

“Shots fired at Pentagon, no injuries

WASHINGTON | Tue Oct 19, 2010 5:33pm EDT

(Reuters) - A gunman using what investigators believe was a high-velocity rifle fired up to seven shots at the Pentagon early on Tuesday, shattering two windows but injuring no one.

No suspects have yet been identified in the morning incident, the first shooting at the Pentagon since a lone gunman in March shot and wounded two security officers near a Pentagon entrance, and was killed in the process.

Director of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency Steven Calvery said he considered the shooting to be "a random event" and did not foresee any new security measures.

But he added that the investigation was continuing and that authorities were looking for any possible link to a shooting over the weekend at the nearby National Museum of the Marine Corps, which also only caused minor damage to the building.

"Right now we consider this just a random event. But if our investigation and others' ascertain that it's part of a larger incident, we would have to evaluate that," Calvery told a Pentagon news briefing.”

What happened?

Just another day at the office at the Pentagon. Watch for low-flying airplanes too.

I don’t buy it, the lack of security vigilance, because we paid for more and better.

“Pentagon scare: ‘Nothing suspicious’ found in vehicle

By Justin Jouvenal

Updated, 9:40 a.m.

Authorities have found “nothing suspicious” in a vehicle that was found near the Pentagon this morning or on a man that was taken into custody overnight in the Arlington Cemetery, an FBI official said.

Police closed roads around the Pentagon early this morning after discovering the vehicle off Washington Boulevard. Authorities are in the process of reopening the roads.

Updated, 9:28 a.m.

Roads around the Pentagon were shut down this morning after authorities took a “suspicious man” into custody overnight in Arlington Cemetery, said Sgt. David Schlosser, a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police.

The man was found in the cemetery after it closed and Schlosser said authorities decided it was “important” to locate his vehicle following an interview with him. Schlosser said the man was “not very cooperative.”

“That caused this [incident] to go up a little bit,” Schlosser said.

Arlington County police found the car off of Washington Boulevard near the Pentagon early this morning, Schlosser said.

NBC News reported earlier a suspicious device had been found in the car, but Schlosser would not confirm that an explosive or other type of device had been found. An Arlington County bomb disposal unit is currently looking at the car and teams would be doing sweeps around the Pentagon, Schlosser said.

There was no timeframe for reopening roads around the Pentagon, which were extremely congested. The investigation has closed Routes 27 and 110, all ramps to and from Interstate 395 near the Pentagon and eastbound Interstate 66 to Route 110. The Pentagon remains open.

Arlington National Cemetery was closed earlier this morning while authorities investigated suspicious activity at the cemetery, according to cemetery spokeswoman Jennifer Lynch. It reopened shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Dan Stessel, a Metro spokesman, said rail service at the Pentagon station is operating normally this morning and ridership is up because of the situation. He said there are bus bays at the Pentagon that are open “but getting to them is nearly impossible.” Buses that normally operate to or from the Pentagon are being rerouted to the Pentagon City Metro stop, he said.

Dr. Gridlock has a full rundown of traffic closures in the area.

On Monday, a driver was arrested after police found him with a gun and a suspicious package near the Pentagon.

Stay with PostLocal as the story develops. Authorities said there will be another press conference at 9:30 a.m. We will carry the press conference live and provide a full update afterward.”
