NP Rank:
what is imperialism- in terms of north korea
from a dictionary, imperialism is the remote adminstration of a superpower over a country, this can mean troops, trading merchants, regular visits by business people, and on long term basis, installation of foreign lifestyle.
also from the left corner, the definition of imperialism is another one: historically just the highest form of capitalism. however, their classical texts are old, from the time, when britain still was an empire, and maintained "colonies".
now condolezza rice, secretary of the state (USA), writes: US cool on closer N Korea ties
"Even though Condoleezza Rice said she was pleased about news the New York Philharmonic Orchestra was being allowed to play in North Korea, she insisted denuclearisation was the priority and that North Korea was "not a regime the United States is prepared to engage broadly". -"
what could this mean- to engage broadly?
1. if you take a look at japan, from a certain viewpoint the interrogation was required. however, after end of the war, occupation happened, and installation of american lifestyle. rock music, commercial love, second hand shops, navy bases. it is clear the japanese asked for help (after end of the war), but also the americans monopolized the situation. nowadays, not everyone in japan will show daily smile about the americans. for instance, in the 1980s, rivaleries about manufacturing, and trade, appeared.
2. korea was not a country without culture, a disordered 3rd world republic, after WW2 ended, and the americans also occupied korea. they (the americans) seem to forget, that korea was only occupied by the japanese, shortly after 1900, and before of that, korea was an independent kingdom. this resulted in the korea war. in the follow up, the americans occupied south korea (until today), and in the northern half of the peninsula, the DPRK (democratic republic of korea) was proclaimed.
in terms of north korea, the US imperialist provoked a war of aggression, and struggled the young republic in its cradle.
think yourself, if in the view of the korean people, the occupation was righteous, or imperialist. pyonyang was bombarded, destroyed completely, and 2 million people died.
now this was the history situation. if you read the news, they say "no human rights", "floods", and "people dying from starvation". maybe they are living in primitive huts? i have researched the truth on the internet, including materials produced by the DPRK itself. it occured, they have modern buildings in pyongyang, sport stadiums, electricity, even computers. OK there are mass games (150,000 people display picture shows using colored cards), and the "million man show" (a large military parade).
it seems to be true that they spend more than ten percent of their money on military, and for unknown reason, they maintain the most spook building of the world: the ryugyong hotel! it is a large pyramid, guess 105 floors, but it remains unfinished since the early 1990. it is the largest building in pyongyang.
you should take a look yourself, how the koreans understand themselves, and also i guess, they do not want our drugs, commercial love, rock music with bad lyrics, and scare stories. yes it seems to be true that they maintain censorship, and to protect their people, travel to the outside world is very limited (it is not impossible, if you have money).
i have attached some pictures, and also here links to slideshows. you can see various pictures from pyongyang.
slideshow 1 - north korea
try this link, if slideshow does not show up
slideshow 2 - pyongyang try this link, if slideshow does not show up
OK the slideshows are SWF objects, sometimes they work, sometimes not.
the truth is that if i take a look the out-of-this-world attitude of modern pop stars, show-biz figures, i am scared too. i think if i criticize them, they maybe can make me worries (if i write their names). so what is up with democracy. you like the bad lyrics, the glamour and red-light, or you better be quiet. or they say "you are round the bend", or "we can not understand you".
i do not write this article, to give myself a "red paint". it is not true, i think free trade is good, nike, coca-cola, and advertising. but the reason is, to make people understand the culture of DPRK, for instance their karaoke. they do not understand themselves as 3rd world country, ready to catch up foreign cultural property, such as rock music. this maybe has worked in japan, after the atomic bombings, but it won't work in korea. in their own words, their "motherland" means more to them, than their youth and own lives.
but also the good message is, i think korea wants to progress, to improve trade relations, to rise their living standards, or for instance, modernize human right. if you say, korea can not, or is not willing to move one millimetre, than this is not true. but it is not only the politicans, the common people should have a better understanding of korea, and that the occupation was a glitch, in the view of the koreans, not righteous. also they are not dreaming of american lifestyle, even if it has the "desire of the unknown". koreans are known for brutal police, long prison sentences, and from some sources, even executions. for this reasons, foreigners should not try to push content into this country. the result would not only be that they are expelled, but their korean partners imprisoned, together with their families!
OK this is some "scary lore" i gathered through research on youtube, and other places on the net. i have attached one video, which is very obviously criticizing western photography papparazzi methods. awaiting your comments...
my hope is that the koreans will learn the lesson to differentiate from US imperialist to imperialist. i think it is their right if they do not want imperialism, but at one point of time, they could stop to discriminate the USA to maintain status quo, being world's no.1 imperialist.

this is a point of view, thanks at first. however, my article is about the people living in north korea, not about General Kim Jong Il. he is not even mentioned in my article.
also if you write about the *orn tapes, nowadays, in the USA, any people can have such entertainment on DVD, or online, just sign up here and there using a credit card. i do not know if they also transfer the stuff to the DPRK.
about the alcohol, maybe General Kim Jong Il has a drinking problem? i am not responsible for that. maybe a word from himself would be of help.
so what do you think about people in DPRK? new clothing every three years? one out of ten families visiting to prisons? gathering drinking water from local rivers?
no the truth is that some things in the DPRK are broken, not at least, that ominous RYUGYONG hotel.
you should be more specific, and give titles of the movies. if you have a *orn problem personally, i do not have one, and i am not responsibly for yours.

In a Nutshell Nike, I do not know any long or short term strategy that would work. North Korea is a Nation of Oppressed Brainwashed and Dowtrodden Individuals (Who seriously need our help),when I say Brainwashed, at least when questioned publicly about their Leader Kim Jong iL. All is great and wonderful, at least that is what the masses say to Foreign Media and especially when other North Koreans are about.
You see North Koreans cannot even trust their own family members, who they fear would turn them into the authourities, hence a long retraining and re-education camp, and not just for the family member who says anything negative against their leader, but every man, woman and child from that household and in some cases even extended families, if there is even a hint of collusion amongst them. Again I refer to research, when an american news crew accompanied a group of Eye pecialists, some of these american doctors being at the top of their field. These doctors went on a humanitarian request and invitation by President for eternity Kim Jung iL. North Korean citizens lined up by the hundreds to have their eyesight restored in what is a simple procedure "Glaucoma". These procedures were performed in various North Korean Hospitals and clinics. Once treated and cured of blindness the Grateful North Korean citizens were rounded up in a large auditorim in what the US media and Doctors thought was a heartfelt thanks for their medical efforts. One by one the Korean propaganda machine was in full swing, with a North Korean offical calling our easch North Korean seated to come to the stage. As the North Koreans one by one approached the stage, "They shouted Praise and reverence not for the Doctors who cured them, but to a rather imposing Photograph of Kim Jong iL placed prominently "Centre Stage" between the Doctors. The look on the Doctors and US Media faces said it all, as some North Korean citizens in what looked more like a Baptist "Here comes mah Lawd Jaysus" celebration including laying prostrate on the floor writhing with praise for their God like Leader, pretty much states in a nutshell, Kim Jong iL is , well, frankly, "Nuts".
Of course if you wish a more well balanced approach to what North Koreans life is like, you should contact Now Public Editor Cynthia Yoo who is of Korean Descent, perhaps she may have a different perspective than mine, But I doubt it.
I had a thought, you should watch South Parks Team America "World Police" on Kim Jung iL, most likely more accurate study of the man in a comedic sense than most analysts state. As for his penchant for the Western Decadent good life of Porn Videos and Expensive Cognac, I stand by that statement.

I find when speaking to many people they have strong opinions over this issue. The truth is that North Korea is THE most secretive country in the world and its impossible to know exactly what's going on. There is too much suppression of information and what does come out is unreliable. I question if even the government there has a complete grasp of the situation.
We, the public, in the west have been basing our opinions on whatever the media pumps out ("Team America" is a popular one) but what we do forget is that this country is a product of cold war politics and since the collapse of Russia it has developed much due to the American foreign policy (or lack of it towards NK). To pass the blame completely on the Kim's is to glance past the actions that we have taken to help shape North Korea to what it is today.
What is needed now is to develop a policy towards the country and not leave it a a side issue hoping the country will collapse and solve all these issues. It hasn't collapse yet and it has survived the decline of world communism, famine, death of a cherished leader, war, failled economy and so on.
Lets no glance over the issue of historical responsibillities and work with the Koreans instead of demonising the place as this method has not helped so far...
