The trial is over now for Amanda Knox , and she has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for the assault and murder of her British house-mate,  Meredith Kercher.

In the aftermath,  her family is determined to appeal her case,  and have set off to visit her in prison today.  They are contemplating moving to Perugia,  Italy,  to be a support to her,  and to oversee the appeals process.

A Washington Senator is involved with the case,  and plans to speak to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about possible US government intervention in the Italian court system.

The insight into the American student's state of mind was disclosed by her stepmother Cassandra, after Knox was convicted with her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito at the assizes court in Perugia, Umbria, of murdering Meredith Kercher.

"I spoke to her the day before the verdict and she told me she was confident that she would be cleared," Mrs Knox told the Telegraph. "She was optimistic that she would be coming home with us.

The sentence came after a year-long trial that gripped Italy and drew intense media attention.

The woman's father, Curt Knox, arrived at the Capanne prison accompanied by Amanda's stepmother, her stepsisters Ashley and Delaney, Amanda's sister Deanna Knox, and Amanda's mother Edda Mellas.

A defense lawyer for the convicted American student also visited her.

Luciano Ghirga, who spent an hour with Knox on Saturday morning, said Amanda Knox spent her first night in jail as a convicted woman under strict surveillance, but denied reports that she had been put under suicide watch.

Ghirga said she was "tired and disappointed."

"She's worried for her parents, too, but she is keeping the faith needed for the next steps," the lawyers said.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the 2007 murder of Kercher, a 21-year-old student from Leeds University, alongside her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who was and given a 25-year jail term. He has been interned in a different facility.

In Italy verdicts can be appealed by either side. Both the Knox family and lawyers for Sollecito have announced an appeal, which could take months to begin.

Curious.  What is the reaction on the verdict in Italy? Any idea?

I am Italian born and becme a US citizen  when i was a youg boy.I am now fifty eight.I think any country that does not give a US citizen a fair trial should be held  to explain their position to the us govt.and if we do not agree we should demand a new trial without delay in  the european court  and if they do not agree the least we should do is demand an imediate release. If Amanda Knox was a famous journalist or from a influential family we would be acting without delay. The people in power should not forget this is someones daughter and sister.we cannot be a country who only acts quickly and agresively for a few we are all us citizens and this should be our right to have our country intervien in an unjust situation,And  by the way i love my Italian roots  and most things about my birthplace, but this was as wrong as wrong gets so Mr Obama please feal the pain of this family and act without further delay.

Guy; thanks for your nice comments,  but Hugh, in general, the Perugians and other Italians demonized Knox and feel that justice was done.  I am,  as usual, of two minds regarding Knox.

Why do Americans think they can get a free pass when they go abroad. I do not know if she is guilty or innocent. Do you know one way or the other? Probably not so shut your pie hole.
