Martin Luther King Jr Day 2012: What's Open & What's Closed?
January 16, 2011 is Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday to honour the famed civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK Day is the first federal holiday of the calendar year and falls on the third Monday of January. (Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1921, but the holiday is observed as a floating holiday.)
While most people will use MLK Day 2011 to enjoy a day off with friends and family, not to mention reflect on the accomplishments of Dr. King, there are others who hope to get some business done during their day off from work.
Are Banks Open on Martin Luther King Day 2012?
As a rule, banks will be closed on Martin Luther King Day 2012. The US Commercial Service website indicates that Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday, which means that most major financial institutions are closed, as well as state and federal government offices.
This means that the deceptive quote on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC won't be fixed on MLK Day. There is, however a 30-day deadline to get it sorted out.
Post Offices Closed
Post offices are also closed, and mail will not be delivered. Public schools will also be closed. Most private businesses will be open as usual, hoping to bring in those of you who would normally be at work.
