When Vancouver Meets Nashville

Last night I heard a talk by native Nashvillian Joel Solomon, who has lived in Vancouver for many years. According to http://activistcash.com, Joel Solomon is

Director, Tides Foundation; Founding board member, Tides Canada; President, Joel Solomon Company; Manager, Renewal Partners & Endswell Foundations; Former President, the Threshold Foundation; Founding Member, Social Venture Network

Joel had been left a large inheritance from his family and has used this money to make the world a better place to live and "to leave something for the future," as he said at the Nashville Net Impact monthly meeting. He reminded us of something that has long been forgotten on Wall Street and in many corporate boardrooms: to sell values in our missions and purposes in life.

I left the meeting with these messages:

  • All of us can contribute to the betterment of the world, including those like myself who grew up in a family of modest means.
  • We do not have to sacrifice our values or our responsibility to society to make money and to be successful.

Joel also related to us some of the exciting and innovative programs to revitalize parts of Vancouver.I am glad that I had the opportunity to hear Joel Solomon speak. He is a motivating individual, who I did not know existed until last evening. All you at nowpublic.com who are headquartered in Vancouver are lucky to have a person like Joel in your area.
