A White Guy's Take Concerning The Valley Swim Club

Nothing that occurs in "private clubs" throughout America surprises me. Some of the most despicable/racist/anti-social Americans sit on the boards  and comprise the membership ranks of America's "private clubs". Indeed, many Americans gravitate toward "private clubs", because they have a compelling and pathological need to be with, and fit in with, their "own kind" in order to maintain their delusions of superiority. But even at that, they can't seem to get along with their "own kind". Many Americans need to get it into their heads that their you-know-what stinks just like everbody else's you-know-what does.

I'm a middle-aged white guy, born and bred in America, and I witness Americans looking down their noses at other Americans  everyday--including myself at times. Their condescension may be subtle for the most part, however it exists and it's noticeable all the same. Whatever occurred at The Valley Swim Club, should serve as a valuable lesson, to all Americans, that there is a reason why many, throughout the world, hold Americans in contempt. Quite frankly, and just from my narrow American perspective, there appears to be alot of ignorant/white trash inhabiting America today that possess relatively high levels of disposable income. As a result, they manage to maintain an air of respectability and fool others into believing that they're superior on all fronts. America has made many efforts, throughout the years,  to live up to its claim of equal rights and equal justice for all. But, unfortunately, for the majority that are not of the chosen few, America has alot of work to do in regard to "justice for all". Yes . . . in America you can be the dumbest/most ignorant/morally reprehensible  person on the face of the earth. But as long as you've got the bucks, you're the greatest.

I agree with your strong statement Rory.  Don't every forget the story of Marian Anderson, the great singer who hailed from South Phila.  The DAR still has a "stink" about it.  Now too the Valley Swim Club.

great article.  it seems membership has it's privileges.  my coworker's ex husband is openly, within their circle, teaching their children to hate.  she constantly worries about it and tries to combat it, because one of her best friends is black.  they come from money as well, but she loves teaching.  it's unnerving to know that in this day and age, purposefully teaching ones kids to hate still happens.  i once overheard a doctor actually use the phrase "someone's got to take out the trash."  i like to think i'm pretty astute, but i was truly taken aback by that comment.
