White House: Daschle's Tax Failure Was a 'Serious Mistake'
Back tax issues doesn't seem to bother President Obama when picking cabinet positions. President Obama and other top Democrats are calling failure to pay taxes a serious but forgivable mistake. When Linda Chavez was up for Labor Secretary in 2001 under President Bush, she was ousted quickly due to tax issues. In 1993 Zoe Baird withdrew as Attorney General nominee after failing to pay taxes. The right is wondering if this is, 'change Americans can be deceived in'? Paying ones taxes was touted as being Patriotic by the now Vice-President Biden. Based on Bidens criteria, are Obama's nominees un-patriotic? Is anyone wondering what happened to the promise of ethical, not business as usual, politics that was promised to American People by President Obama?
The White House today called Tom Daschle's failure to pay more than $100,000 in back taxes a "serious mistake," but the president still "absolutely" supports his nomination to be secretary of Health and Human Services.

Daschle recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in unpaid taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press.

The White House backing came on a day when the beleaguered nominee apologized and said he was "deeply embarrassed" over the tax flap.
In an effort to end the controversy over Daschle's nomination as HHS secretary, a key Democrat also voiced his support and Daschle agreed to be grilled about his tax issues today by the 23 members of the Senate Finance Committee.
To show that ones own words can come back to haunt you. Senator Daschele in 2002 said on the senate floor that any American who refuses to pay ones taxes should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Additionally, he called out Republicans by name who used legal tax shelters, 'tax Cheats'.
How about a real Stimulus plan, a 1 year tax holiday? Call it the Daschele Plan, now that will stimulate the economy! The bottom line: Congress should use the Daschele tax doctrine on nominee Daschele.

We were just wondering how really prominent people headed for Cabinet positions can get this far in the application process without their financial infelicities being discovered, and yet during the transition period there were all sorts of rules and stipulations about the kind of information you had to make available to be considered for much lowlier posts.

The concern is that President Obama promiced nominees that would be above the fray. Paying ones taxes is a basic show of civil responcibility. Surly there is someone in America that can pass the basic tests of being a law abiding citizen

"Nobody's Perfect" is the line Americans were given by the Obama administration when asked about another fraudulent case of tax evasion by the Obama nominees. It is bad enough that nominees Bill Richardson, Hillary Clinton, and Timothy Geithner have all had major ethic issues, but another one! Tom Daschle will most likely be appointed to Secretary of Health and Human Services (Welfare) even after not paying $128,000 in taxes and another $12,000 in interest! But if you are concerned about this I have two answers for you: Obama's Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs said "It was a serious mistake..." and Tom Daschle himself "apologized". Doesn't that make you feel better...
Yeah, it did not work for me either.

That is a good point as I have read arguments that Nanny's and just being a woman were part of the problems there. NPR had a fantastic show on the issue that men get a pass, while woman see to have to live by a much higher standard to become a nominee. A real issue. Surley there are more woman in America who should be in the congress and senate.

The IRS does seize all assets of the John and Jane Do's and at times does even throw them in Jail and the elite can be forgiven and even rewarded?
What sort of Justice is that? The top has to be treated harder then the bottom and not the other way around. I was at one point in favour of Obama and supported his candidacy until I started paying attention to his speeches and now his actions. I did say it earlier and again the US need some one like Colin Powel or Barbara Rockefeller and I am certainly not conservative.

Zoe Baird, Linda Chavez? Hmm... could it be that "tax issues" are only a problem if you are a woman? Yep, I just said that! ;)
But seriously, the entire thing is pretty unacceptable and makes it hard for the government to complain if average citizens have a tax "oversight."

I would hope so! Though they seem hard to come by, for some reason.

I have to wonder if this was accidental or donedeliberately.

If these Obama appointees had any sense of honor they would voluntarily withdraw their names. When a citizen does what these politicians does, they go to prison. When a democrat polictician does it they get an Obama cabinet position. This is NOT the change I voted for. I am disgusted by this.

Hey, I didn't vote, so I don't have to feel bad.
I believe that Obama had to be president because Bush alienated libs and conservatives alike. Hell, I am a centrist and both my "sides" were unhappy, very unhappy, at the second term in particular.
Obama is afraid. That is the truth. He has the power but he doesn't have the juice. He is a real bourgeoise man, a man who played at being "revolutionary" but married an Ivy League graduate, a fellow lawyer, and moved into a big house.
This is not really a "man of the people", not in the way people think. He has a genuinely nice side but his background is extremely protected. Clinton, like him or not, he is a man of the people.
Obama was passed up and groomed by a bunch of half-devils such as Rev Wright and Rezko who never rarely fixed any slum buildings up, and, if he did, they had no heat in the winter.
He's already talked about what happens if he can't fix the problem: being a one-term prez, and he hasn't been in office a month yet.
When you trumpet all those criticisms, you end up having to live up to them yourself, and he knows that he can't deliver and please a lot of people at the same time.
I do have faith that he just might take on China and the trade deficit. That is the key to our problem.
If we have a trade balace, it is because we make more stuff here. When we make more stuff here, wages go up and tax revenues go up and deficits go down. Profits may not be al that wonderful but they will be there.

I was just getting over Tim Geithner's tax issues and now this. Still, somehow, I find Tom Daschle's explanation more palatable than Tim Geithner's excuses--Tom Daschle sounds like he really did work with his accountant whereas Geithner sounded liked he was lying about the errors that he later "found" with his accountant's work.

great start. Nothing changed except hope that he will be a better president. But corruption continues and Lobbying continues, and the same pork is being fed to the bottom feeders and here we go again..

One part of the tax issue, The automobile, I can understand. It is a difficult part of the tax code. That is the part the spin doctors are emphasizing. The other part, Mr. Daschle failure to report $83,333 in consulting income in 2007. Consulting is something that anyone who pays taxes would know is income. Additionally he attempted to deduct as charitable contributions organizations that did not qualify under IRS standards as charity. That is the part of the Nominee's tax issues that are being down played. That is what we call, 'politics as usual'.
The reason polititions hire Public relations firms with expertise in crisis management is so they can spin the news so one hears about the automobile, that anyone can make a mistake on, and buries the story about income and charity that most folks who have a basic understanding of the tax code would indentify as an attempt to evade taxes.

It shows that Elitists believe they live by another standard. You would think democrats, who believe the answer to all of our problems is government control would be happy to pay all of their taxes VP Biden who gives next to nothing to charity told Americans its time to be patriotic. Pay taxes is Patriotic andits time to get on board.
I am just wondering, when i had a tax issue some years ago, sorry wasn't enough. The IRS was going to sieze my assetts, freeze my accounts, and have a fire sale. Guess I am not an elitist. My issue was due to my IRA holder not checking a box. That mistake out the IRS I attack mode and guess what, sorry it wasn't my fought didn't play.

Same old, Same old. Nothing changes except the man/woman in office. All the change that is getting done is that now the unions, labor, and democrats are getting large pieces of the pie. Now that's change. I think they call it bait and switch.

Roy,
I am a fiscal conservative and felt like I had a thorn in my right side for 8 years. Let along some loss of personal Liberty. Folks really thought that all conservatives were in lock step with President Bush... not so.

There would probably no reason why people are going into protest with regards to paying taxes. Money is not the only problem but also the accessibility of the post offices where they can file their taxes. Because a lot of post offices these days are having their foreclosures, I think people must be aware of where to find them easily. A post office locator can come in handy in a pinch. If you have a package you really need to get in the mail, of if you waited to the last minute to do your taxes on the 15th of April, and haven't joined the 21st century yet and E-Filed )you Luddites, you) take heart. You would need personal loans to air mail it, because some post offices will be open until midnight on April15th. It isn't all of them, so you need to find out if it applies to your nearest one. You don't want to need debt consolidation for fines from the IRS because you couldn't use the post office locator.
