The United States has told Libyan Rebels visiting the White House that they are a legitimate and credible interlocker of the Libyan people but stopped short of recognizing them as the Libya's government. The statement came after President Obama's National Security Adviser; Tom Donilon had talks with a senior leader of the National Transitional Council, Mahmoud Jibril.
The Libyan rebels went to Washington to try to boost their political and economic support; they want the Americans to unfreeze billions of Dollars of Libyan assets. The white house said the two sides discussed how the US and the international coalition could provide additional support. And reiterated the call for Col Gadhafi to stand down. But the Americans and Britain have stopped short of recognizing the rebels as the legitimate government in Libya in contrast to France, Italy and Qatar which have done so.
