VP Biden Announces "Retrofit Ramp-Up" Awards

White House Gearing Up for 40th Anniversary of Earth Day

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, the White House is gearing up for five days of activities and events and, according to The Huffington Post, "they're starting big."

Vice President Joe Biden Announced $452 Million Investment in Recovery Act.

Vice President Biden kicked off Earth Day early this year with the announcement $452 million in Recovery Act funding to support a “Retrofit Ramp-Up” in a speech at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building earlier today.   These funds will make energy efficiency affordable for hundreds of thousands of businesses and homeowners, and create tens of thousands of jobs in the process.

Investing in retrofits is a triple win.  It’s a win for consumers who save money on their energy bill.  It’s a win for the environment because we’re using less energy, which cuts down on harmful emissions from greenhouse gases.  And, finally, it’s a win for the American economy, because it creates green jobs, jobs that can’t be outsourced.

25 cities will benefit from the “Retrofit Ramp-Up”.

It's Not All About Government

President Obama's Earth Day Message:

President Obama issued an Earth Day message with a challenge: He wants you to take action. While Washington has its place, Obama argues that the environmental movement is not about the laws that are passed, but about citizens coming together to make demands for the Earth.

"It can be as simple as riding the bus or the subway to work, making your home more energy efficient, or organizing your neighbors to clean up a nearby park," Obama said.

Learn more about Going Green at the White House Earth Day website -- reduce waste, recycle and remove dangerous toxins from your home and garden. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and  U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have tips for 'greening your lifestyle' too.
