As a potentially deadly terrorist attack was thwarted by the passengers and the crew on board Flight 253 of Northwest Airlines flying to Detroit yesterday, many are wondering who is the man behind the alleged terror attack - the suspect Nigerian terrorist Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab is a 23-year-old Nigerian national and an engineering student at University College London suspected of having ties to terrorists, although there is no evidence yet he was trained by Al Qaeda. The suspect himself insists he has ties to Al Qaeda and obtained his explosive device in Yemen. This statements have not been confirmed by U.S. officials yet. He was not on the U.S. 'no fly' list, however. It is believed that he lived in a $4 million apartment in Central London. The terror aspect is also believed to be a son of prominent former Nigerian minister and banker Alhaji Umaru Mutallab who warned the United States about his son's "extreme" religious views. The terror suspect's father says his son held such radical views since high school. Mutallab's father said he is surprised that his son was even allowed on an airplane flying into the United States.

Mutallab has allegedly tried to light up explosives while Flight 253 was making a landing in Detroit on December 25. He had an explosive device close to his groin and was successful at initial ignition of the device causing smoke to billow in the cabin. However, his further actions were stopped by passengers and crew, among them Jasper Schuringa, who wrestled the explosive device away from Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab and covered it with his own hands. It was reported the terror suspect behaved very calm after he was subdued. It is being reported Mutallab was traveling without a return ticket.

This is not the first incident involving terror suspects trying to detonate an explosive device on board an airplane. Richard Colvin Reid was the "shoe bomber" who tried to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes aboard American Airlines Flight 63 in 2001. Reid was trained by Al Qaeda. He is now serving his life sentence in a U.S. prison.

This is clearly a case of negligence on the part of security agencies from the take off, stopover and flight reconnection. This individual has been on watch list, warned by his fathe to the US authorities and yet they waited until he was able to carry out his nefarius deadly act. Thank God he was not time for him to meet his virgins, whom he will never meet. This is a case of terrorism not human cause disaster as termed by the present US govt. This is a wake up call.

I love it, there are thousands of Apple Pie Americans on the no-fly list for no apparent reason however even when warned by a family member, this radical individual was permitted on an Amerikan bound flight.

Is he a Terrorist?  HMMM that's a poser!  Let's see apparently witnesses say they were terrorized!

So I guess this is a moot point~

I think it's good to see that since the 9/11 attacks, passengers on airlines reacting to potential threats so quickly, it basically puts a lot of security on each flight.

Some details about Umar Faouk Adbul Mutallab as provided by African news source:

The suspect, Abdulfarouk Umar Muttalab who is an engineering student at the University College, London had been noted for his extreme views on religion since his secondary school days at the British International School, Lome, Togo.

At the secondary school, he was known for preaching about Islam to his schoolmates and he was popularly called "Alfa", a local coinage for Islamic scholar. After his secondary school, the young man, family sources said went to University College London to study engineering and later relocated to Egypt, and then Dubai. While in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, he declared to his family members that he did not want to have anything to do with any of them again.

It is even more disturbing that the US Embasssy in London had issued a multi-entry visa to Mr. Mutallab even though he was already on a watch list when his father, Dr. Alhaji Umaru Mutallab reported on his son.

Barau, take it easy,he is only expressing his view jst like u are, heroism should be borne out of how u risked ur life to affect other people positively, just imagine if u had a brother, sister or any loved one in that plane and it blew up,would u still refer to mutallab as a hero?for taking your loved one away?think man,no hard feelings man, take care.

Is quite obvious that u can not led the country to the right channel. just seat down and read what u typed.  as a christian if u have the opportunity of becoming a minister, or even governor won't u do more than that. And if we just look at it am very sure that u will be one of those bench warmers in the church. is it only muslims that ha been running the affair of the state ever since independence. sit down and read histories. train urself as a good human being and see things in a very good perceptive.

Odenigbo, i do not think u should put sentiments into wat happened, do not try to make it a christian muslim issue,i know muslims that have been denied visas as well as christians. What mutallab did was borne out of his belief, its only left to make him understand that taking peoples life does not please God,am so glad it didnt succeed, thanks also to his father who never supported his extreme views.Cheer up my guy Nigeria go better, take care.

it is the right time for the whole world to stop viewing TERRORISM as muslim characters but rather a problem that could curse another world war (3rd world war). some of these issues come from greviencies, orientation and believe that has no origin to any religions. I quit agreed that many of these young guys are brainwatched by those who believe in terrorism for their own personal interests. I believe Richard Colvins Reid was not a muslim. A "shoe bomber" who tried to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes aboard American Airlines Flight 63 in 2001. it was reported trained by Al Qaeda. He is now serving his life sentence in a U.S. prison.

I believe quiet frankly that Odenigbo is a fool for making that nasty comment, and people like Odenigbo are unpatriotic who believe stongly in religious differences. Why are you blaming the embassy official  because you cannot secure a visa, must you go of out the country  before you make it?  please learn to stay, love and develope your country. Just a piece of advise.

Shola u're stupid. Why are u abusing Aminu after tellin the truth, that shows 2 the world that u're not a good christain or u'r an ignorant about the religion of christanity which jesus (A.S) preach. Pls go back and study the real christian scriptures that are not changed.

The American government should include Baba Barau, Aminu and Usman Bello on the watch list as possible terrorists, since they see a suspected terrorist as a hero. Their actions has justified the US government for including Nigeria on the terrorist list. We have more potential terrorist including those mentioned above. IT IS A PITY!!!

My comment is not to against any one, but just to think of what 'life' isal about as we all have one life to live and that we shall all be rewarded by God according to our did here on earth. Terrorist or no terrorist, religion or no religion, let all pray for the peace of the whole world.

I think we all hv d right to xpress ourselves... however we shld always be objective in our actions, utterances and beliefs. That 1 Nigerian was apprehended out of over 140Million others is not enough ground to drag the name of Nigeria to the muds... The boy in question, how long has he stayed in Nigeria? Where was he educated? Who are his friends...? Where is is mother from? Nigerians love life and themselves so much that suicide bombing cannot be associated us whether outside or within the country. Farouk's case is most unfortunate and it must be a product of the society that groomed him!

Hola Olu

Nigeria and Nigerian are just unfortunate. It is quite obvious that the so-called elites for instance, the father of the terrorist are the many problems of Nigerian. The elites and their children have consistently drag Nigerian in the mud. They loot the treasury to enjoy the best of life and spend stolen money on their children at the detriment of others. I have no regret for the family, but the US govt should just help Nigeria by constant preaching to our leaders to do the right thing for her citizen. Now that the US has listed Nigeria as a terrorist state, the majority of the people that have contributed negatively to growth of the country in the past and presently are now shouting. God will break them into pieces.

The issue of umar faruk is not suppose to affect all Nigerians, in the other way round his dad had sounded a warning to the American embassy in Nigeria so i think there is an issue of insecurity from the americans. And finally, i think the person who commit his sins shall face the quencyquencies of his sins alone and not the 150million Nigerians

Bello judging from your name u and the suspect are from the same part of the country as well as aminu and co who choose to curse and insult people for expressing their views. All am saying is that i like the way u expressed your view, very logical and simple, i think your likes are the kind of muslims i would love to have as friends, keep it up.As for aminu and co continue your...it would only make u guys end up unhappy people.

I think this a big lesson for the Nigerian government, I think the problem comes from the Government, It's time for them to share Love to their us Nigga, A lot of people are suffering with out no future and I believe suffering can develop alot of bad intention, I saw a lot of comment about staying in Nigeria to help the country, But I want to ask a question, Do we have the right of speak as in Democary ? So what help do we need to do when the government don't care about their people and also we people don't even care about the name of the country, Several people just do some bad things and never care about the name of the country. We are just unfortunate........Let us remember we practising religion that we are one and we serve the same God.

It is craziness on the part of US and its so-called security agents, I think  that America has failed in their fight against terrorism, so they did to Afghanistan, if they can reason in their normal senses, they would have look for better way to avoid the re occurrence in the near future than sending the name of my beloved Country Nigeria to the mud, after all just a little experiment by a little boy of 23 years old to US security, shame on you America, Shame to you the Giant of the whole world, shame to you security Agents of America, well I blame Nigerians that are crazy to travel to US, as for me, I got no regards for USA as a Nation, but what the little boy did its wrong, because I have regard for human lives.

Religion once again root of all evil

0
T-square

you have all expressed yourselves u have a right to your opinion but one thing that bothers me is this the U.S-terrorists clash is more of political than religious because at first it was the world trade centre and not a church , later an airplane from one of the influential airports, another question is are these terrorists using their own kids and not promising but stupid kids like farouk
