Utoya Shooter's Name Not Released: Norwegian Media Cautious, The Sun Goes with 'Norway's 9/11'

Evidently the local media has compiled plenty of background information on the suspect in the Oslo bombing and Utoya shooting, though his name has not been made public. All we know so far (as of 6pm ET/3pm PT) is that the suspect is a 32-year Norwegian man.

The Sun's headline for its June 23 issue will be "Norway's 9/11". Radio NRJ's Ketil Stensrud described the headline as "disgraceful journalism".

As the dust settled, public opinion immediately pointed a finger towards the Middle East, aided in part by a blog post implying that the attacks were a reaction to the Muhammad cartoons republished in 2010. That narrative got derailed, though, when it emerged that the Utoya shooter was Norwegian, and that he had been spotted in Oslo prior to the bombing.

This meant that the two attacks were linked, and that the threat was not foreign but domestic. An emerging theory, possibly linked to a 10-year-old story about a recalcitrant white supremacist with several weapons- and explosives-related arrests, is that this was a neo-Nazi attack.

As no group has yet taken responsibility for the two mass murders, the rest of the world is waiting for someone to blame.
