Why the bible is a poor argument to use against marriage rights

Some, but not all, Christians believe that there should be no marriage equality for gay couples, because their supposed god says so. First this illustrates the belief of these people, that we should live in a semi-theocracy. They do not believe that the American people are sovereign over their own decisions, but this supposed deity is sovereign. This is no difference whatsoever than the imams of Iran or Saudi Arabia lecturing people to obey the Quran, because their god supposedly says so.

If we legalize marriage equality, some of them even believe we might as well legalize murder. Ignoring the fact that the god of the bible actively sanctions murder of those of other tribes, let's examine this logic. Gays marrying does not harm anyone. Murdering someone else does in fact, severely harm another person.

Some state that the average American in the 1960s would be severely opposed to marriage for gay couples. Yes, and so what? In 1960 the vast majority of people in about a third of our nation, would be severely opposed to interracial marriage. In 1850, almost all Americans would have opposed the right of women to vote. In both cases, the justification given for this opposition would have been the bible.

The biggest opponents to interracial marriages were religious fundamentalist types. The biggest opponents to suffrage voting rights for women were religious fundamentalists. The bible is not about liberty, but prohibitions on conduct that primitive tribesman did not like. Such as worshiping of other religions. The punishment for that of course, is death in the bible.

These are the moral standards of some, but as a humanist, I know that morality that ignores reducing harm and suffering is not morality but just the ramblings of people who don't like other people living their lives in ways they don't like.
