Why did 90% of Republicans vote against state medical marijuana?
The vast majority of Americans support medical marijuana. The numbers are staggering, in how supportative they are in fact. Indeed, a bare majority of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, and not just for medical purposes.
With that in mind, why is the Republican party so against patients, with consultation and prescriptions from their doctors, having such a choice? Are they not supposedly the party of states' rights?
Well, not when it comes to this issue or the ability of states to have same sex marriages. When it comes to the issue of medical marijuana, there is no stronger supporter of using the DEA to conduct SWAT raids of medical marijuana outlets, even if these outlets are abiding by their state laws on this drug. So much for smaller government, huh?
Well, when a congressional bill that would ensure that the U.S. Department of Justice cannot fund operations against medical marijuana outlets that adhere to state law came up, 90% plus of Republicans voted against it. 90%! That requires a lot of apathy for medical marijuana patients. By the way, 30% of Democrats voted against it, still too high, but much better than the other side.
Now, I bet a lot of these congressmen drink alcohol from time to time. That is their right. But they don't need it for medical reasons, though ironically they want to stop those who consume marijuana for medical purposes from doing so. That takes a lot of gall. That is either apathy to the suffering of others, or just a sign of the zealotry among pro-drug war activists.
Oh, by the way in Minneapolis, MN, police gave marijuana to individuals in the Occupy movement. The purpose seems to be to train police to spot someone high on marijuana, and then arrest him/her. This wasn't done in a controlled lab, but by cops just picking up young people off the street and asking them if they wanted to smoke some. I don't know if they bothered to check the I.D. of these individuals to ensure that they were all at least 18.
So, marijuana is such a dangerous drug that supposedly we can't even have controlled studies on its' effectivness for reducing pain, but we can get young men and women high, in order to get their friends and fellow activists arrested?
