Why Julian Assange should be a hero to conservatives
I made and I continue to make the claim that American conservatives should be supporting Julian Assange. Having preached for decades that the government should be accountable to the taxpayer, the American conservatives should see as a hero a man who informs the taxpayer of what is being done with his money. And yet we see many on the American Right howling for the head of Julian Assange. Wherefore, I ask, such hypocrisy?
One claim being made is that his hacking was in violation of the law. And yet the same people hail as heroes the guys who hacked into UN. If Assange is to be seen as a lawbreaker then so should those hackers as well. For that matter, if Assange is to be seen as a lawbreaker, then so should half of the computer-literate people in the world. The only difference between the actions of the UN hackers and the actions of Julian Assange is that they targeted different organizations. And if one is to be seen as a hero then by all reason and logic the other should as well.
There are many who claim that howling for the head of Julian Assange is American patriotism. This shows complete lack of understanding of what American patriotism means. American patriotism never meant allowing the government to get away with grave wrongs. A person who seeks to protect the government in its wrongdoings is not a conservative; he is a fascist. Conservatism demands principle and honesty from the government, not enables the government in its crimes. And the person who does is not a real conservative.
One frequent claim has been that Assange's revelations have put American lives at risk. Nothing is further from the truth. The bulk of the revelations don't even deal with America's present military activities and put at risk absolutely nobody. As for America's present military activity, the Iraq war is no longer being fought; as for Afghanistan, the leaks reveal the situation between 2004 and 2009, not present troop locations or movements; which means likewise that they put absolutely nobody at risk.
Instead the leaks reveal severe criminal wrongdoing by military personnel; and it is this that the taxpayer truly deserves to know. Whether showing unarmed unthreatening civilians being slaughtered from gunships or revealing how private security firms have been used to mass-murder civilians, all this is information that the taxpayer deserves to know. A real conservative will demand that government action, whether peaceful or military, be carried out in an ethical and honorable manner; and if he does not then he is not a real conservative. Julian Assange has provided the taxpayer a service of revealing what's being done at the taxpayer's expense. And this, by logic of conservatism, makes him a hero.
