NP Rank:
Why workers need unions
Sometimes employers are harsh, inflexible, and non-adaptive. That is what makes them uncompetitive. They are ineffective at leading and working with their most precious asset, their people.
“Pa. Steelworkers Forced To Work During Super Bowl
Manufacturing.Net - February 04, 2011CLAIRTON, Pa. (AP) -- It's only natural that Pittsburgh-area steelworkers would want to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday's Super Bowl.
But a U.S. Steel memo says workers in the Clairton, Irvin and Edgar Thomson mills who miss work Sunday or Monday "without just cause" will face "severe disciplinary action."
The United Steelworkers union has criticized the memo. A U.S. Steel spokeswoman tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the company doesn't comment on employee relations.
The newspaper says USW International vice president Tom Conway responded to the memo with an e-mail -- in black-and-gold type, the Steelers' colors -- that suggested adjusting schedules so volunteers who don't want to watch the game can work during it. Conway suggested lost production during Sunday's 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift could be made up later.”

Interesting story. Certainly many employers eased up for the 2010 Winter Olympics and the FIFA soccer playoffs. I'm glad to see pushback from the Steelworkers.
I've been a union member most of my working life. My jobs have been in the public, private and non-profit sectors, and I am grateful for unions. As a woman, the rights and protections negotiated between my union and my employer have addressed many equality issues.
Not only has my career benefited from sound workplace labour relations and practices - including a boss' recognition of what contributes to good morale and increased productivity - my personal life, and the lives of my family members, have been enhanced by the security and stability that a collective agreement provides.
Have I always agreed with a union position? No. But I have a voice and can use it to speak up if I choose. Like all good relationships, being interested, informed and involved - and having some fun - can make all the difference.
Go Steelers! And go, Steelworkers!

Anything that takes power from the employer isn't publicly popular right now...
and when you have many millions to spend on what you want people to think.....
They tend to think what you tell them :(

More proof of how the employer abuses the worker. Now they wont let them stay home to watch TV. I suppose they wont want to pay the workers for this too. Oh, the inhumanity! When will they wake up to the suffering of the union employee.

I love it when I read about people who lack the entrepreneurship skills to build a buisness but still blindly say how much they love unions, who one day say they want Americans to make more money while the next day vilify people making money. They are lost individual's to say the least. But I guess if people were not being dumbed down by the masses from such union employees as the teachers of this country, then those individuals would be better able to think for themselves, and not be so easily manipulated and conned by said unions.

Study the history of the labor movement in the USA and it will be enlightening. I did that in college. I am a successful entrepreneur, many times over. I have worked with organized labor as an executive of a Fortune 500 company and negotiated contracts with them. The orderly relationship between management and labor made things easier, not harder, to conduct business.

We never know who is, or has been, an entrepreneur. One of the pleasures of the web world. Yes?

We can be honest and forthright, or we can hide and deceive just like any other aspect of life. If you deceive yourself, then deception is your creed with me.
