In what some are considering to be the most significant of recent Wikileaks, a list of sites around the world vital to the security interests of the United States has been leaked online.

The List of US Vital Facilities was compiled by US foreign embassies and missions after a US State Department request in 2009 asking for a list of all installations whose loss could critically impact the national security of the United States.

In addition to obvious pieces of strategic infrastructure like communications hubs, gas pipelines and so on, it contains, amongst other things, a cobalt mine in Congo, an anti-snake venom factory in Australia and an insulin plant in Denmark.

The US missions were asked to list all installations whose loss could critically impact the public health, economic security or national security of the United States.

In Britain, for example, the list ranges from Cornwall to Scotland, including key satellite communications sites and the places where trans-Atlantic cables make landfall.

What is remarkable about the list is how all encompassing it is, literally it seems any power, communication or manufacturing plant that could remotely impact Untied States security is included as vital or critical.

Take the Canadian list of vital facilities by way of example, obviously vital things like bridges and nuclear facilities are critical or vital to US security interests but almost any Canadian power or border location is considered vital to the security interests of the United States - clearly Canada is vital to the security interests of the Untied States.
