William Garner Has Been Executed by Lethal Injection on Tuesday July 13

William Garner, who was convicted of murdering five children in 1992, was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday. Despite Garner's appeals for a stay of execution on Monday, Garner was put to death at 10:38am ET at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.

It was on January 26 1992 that Garner took Addie Mack's keys from her purse and went to her house to steal some of her things. He did take a television, radio boom box, telephone and VCR and then when he was leaving he saw one of the six children sleeping in the house. As he left he then set fire to the home, knowing that children were asleep inside.

Mykkila Mason, 8, Deondra Freeman, 10, Markeca Mason, 11, Richard Gaines, 11 and Denitra Satterwhite, 12 all died of smoke inhalation. It was only Rod Mack, 13, who survived the fire. He, now 31-years-old, along with his mother and some other relatives witnessed Garner's execution.

Garner's public defenders argued at the clemency hearing that his "violent and dysfunctional" upbringing and "limited intellect, with a history of developmental disorders since birth and brain impairment from lead poisoning" should merit a stay of execution. But the courts disagreed.
