President Obama is correct in fighting the war with the Taliban in Afghanistan. It was the Taliban that aided and abetted Al Quaida in attacking the United States on 9/11.
A new strategy is being called for in Afghanistan by our military. Maybe that new strategy should be in equipping and training the local Afghan population to use modern rifles, machine guns, and weaponry so that they can effectively defend themselves against the Taliban forces, especially when U.S. forces or Afghan military are not nearby. Of course, ammunition resources should be strictly under the distribution and control of the government.
The Afghan population should be formed into militias with civilian officers and ranks. With great organization and military training such civilian militias can be a great aid to U.S. and Afghan army forces in defeating the Taliban. The civilian population who join should be awarded good income for both training and for being on stand-by duty. A little American money can go very far in these parts of the world.
Our military is waiting for the Afghan army to be prepared and ready to take over. There may not be time for that, and there is no assurance that the Afghan army will ever be prepared enough. Even the U.S. military is finding it very difficult and the American military is prepared! The cry is for more numbers of troops but for how long and what price.
