Speaking to the officers in Lahore the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) said that the Army was ‘single minded in its professional pursuits and totally focused and motivated in accomplishment of its core mission’. These are carefully chosen words and what they clearly convey is that the military is doing its job and nothing else---it is not into conspiracies or interference in matters that are not its concern. The COAS’s statement comes in the wake of an operational preparedness conference, a Corps Commanders meeting, a force integration conference and a Joint Chiefs of Staff conference. Earlier the military had carried out a war game and a planning exercise. There are plans for an air-land exercise in the coming months. The National Command Authority meeting chaired by the Prime Minister reviewed nuclear deterrence capability. The military is obviously responding to the strategic threat perception of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and the tactical threat perception by the Military Intelligence (MI)—these threat assessments being the primary function of these agencies.
