Anti-Collective Bargaining Bill Struck Down by Wisconsin Judge

Scott Walker's anti-union Budget Repair Bill was struck down by Judge Maryann Sumi, who said that state Republicans violated Wisconsin's open meeting laws in their haste to rush the bill through.

The Scott Walker bill is not actually dead, though. An appeal to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court is surely forthcoming. Wisconsin's highest court leans to the right, and, should it decide to hear an appeal, could easily be seen to favor the state Republicans.

The State Senate can also try to push the bill through again, this time legally, but the political environment has changed: several Republican senators are facing recall elections as a direct result of the budget bill flap, and may have to choose between the bill and their jobs. Those not targeted by recalls can see the writing on the wall: the move against state unions was not quite as popular as the Senate seemed to hope it would be.
