Woman’s remains identified
By Charis Patires/Lake Sun Although Miller County Sheriff Bill Abbott would not confirm where the remains were found, they are believed to have been found along a creek on Miller Road. A resident walking a dog stumbled upon the remains last weekend.
Miller County, Mo. -
A two-year search for a missing lake-area woman was closed Thursday when the Miller County Sheriff’s Department confirmed human remains found almost a week ago belong to former Osage Beach resident Brandi Mathews.
The remains were sent to the Boone County Medial Examiner’s Office where dental records were used to confirm it was Mathews, Miller County Sheriff Bill Abbott said.
A resident walking a dog in an area just outside of Eldon contacted authorities Jan. 3 after stumbling upon the remains.
The sheriff’s department spent hours searching the area. A skull and teeth were sent to the medial examiner’s office in an attempt to make a positive identification.
Abbott said he has no idea what may have caused her death, how long the remains had been in the area, or if foul play was involved. The medial examiner’s office will continue to conduct forensics testing to see if they can find out additional information, he said.
Abbott said he contacted Mathews’ mother Thursday afternoon shortly after the sheriff’s department received confirmation from the coroner.
Abbott said they will be working closely with the Osage Beach Department of Public Safety to continue the investigation. Other agencies including the Mid-Missouri Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force, Eldon Police Department and the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Department will assist, he said.
Abbott said they plan on searching the area again and interviewing people that knew Mathews.
Mathews, 24, had not been seen or heard from since September 2006. She was believed to have been living in the Eldon/ Barnett area while working as a dancer at a gentleman’s club.
At the time of her disappearance, Mathews was associated with known drug dealers, according to law enforcement officials. Just before Mathews’ mother lost contact with her, Mathews was involved in a custody dispute involving her then 18-month-old son.
