Women in prison for baring breasts and more anti-gay hysteria
Issues in the news:
I. A Texas Republican legislator named Drew Springer has proposed a bill in that state that would cut health care funding for any school district in the state that offer domestic partnership benefits to employees. Well in particular, any gay employees. This is because a school district in Pflugerville (a suburb of Austin, TX) has enacted such a policy for gay employees and their loved ones.
Austin, and its' greater metro area, is one of the few parts of Texas not controlled by the religious right-wing. Once again, the fear and loathing of gays in the Bible Belt overrides any concerns about equality and health care coverage.
II. Republicans in North Carolina want to make women showing their breasts punishable by up to six months in jail as a felony, if done for sexual reasons. It states that the showing of the “the nipple, or any portion of the areola, or the female breast" would be illegal. I don't think I have to ask that those motiviated for this ban are on the religious right-wing. North Carolina is not the heart of the Bible Belt, so there are more moderate elements in the state.
Well, at least they aren't like Wahhabi Muslims in Saudi Arabia forcing women to be covered from head to toe. Don't forget though, that the biggest opponents of women wearing pants a century ago (along with women voting) were the Christian right-wing of their time.
III. Mike Moroski, an assistant principal at a Catholic school, was fired for writing a pro-marriage equality blog in support of same sex marriage. While the Catholic church has the right to do so, make no mistake, they don't tolerant dissent and they won't tolerate it next month when we have a new pope.
IV. Finally, an anti-gay rights organization is demanding that soldiers should be denied burial at the Arlington National Cemetary. This is how much they hate gays, they don't believe that members of the military who gave their lives for our nation should be buried at the most honored and respected military cemetary in the nation. That's just sad, and extremely pathetic.
