It's not just men who pay prostitutes to sleep with them. For some women, paying for sex is more convenient than cruising bars and clubs trying to find men. "They don't want to be found out. They want to do something private - it's their own world, a part of their life that they want to be secret." Nicole runs a high-class escort agency in the West Midlands, whose clients include women as well as men. Her male escorts host "in-calls" for female clients at a large country cottage, three quarters of a mile away from the nearest town. The exterior gives no clue as to what goes on inside and instead looks more like a French chalet.

My immediate, and main, reaction to this is: sure, why not! Men have been paying for sex for years, women have been providing sex for money, why not the other way around? I also think that the chances of abuse are fewer when men are providing the service (not least because of the differences in physical strength between men and women that has led to much abuse of female sex workers in the past).

Ulimately, however, I'm firmly of the opinion that anyone - man, woman or beast - has the right to do with their body what they choose. My body, my choice. That's always the bottom line for me in these matters.

Interesting, however it has been around for a couple of millenias, Greek and Roman accounts of it do exist for both gender. Yet the Female prostitution has usually been more common for the simple reason that they has been more Woman adult around through out history then Man, Most Man where decimated in wars and other disasters leaving twice the amount of Woman in most generations through out our history. This to a point that Mohamed declared a law that Man could have several wife in the 7s century. The reason was to counter prostitution and give woman a better treatment as well as protect them for abuse and neglect or out casting from their family because they could not get married.

The Islamic law back then was meant to protect woman and help them.

Today though due to two generation of peace and in the Western World even 3 generations by now we have an equal number of Man and Woman around, a first in Human history.

Is that a known fact, Paschen? That female prostitution is more common because there were more women than men? I think it's rather more about the historical 'place' of women as sex objects and the 'right' of men to have sex with whomever they please. Surely if there were more women than men, there wouldn't be demand for sex by men?

The Islamic law back then was meant to protect woman and help them.

That's ironic! Wonder why it changed to the opposite...

Besides it is not hard to spot these women, as many wear little "Cougar Ears" at dance clubs from what I have been told!

Prostitution under matriarchy involved priestesses standing in as embodiments of the goddess of love and then the payment was an offering to the temple and the goddess.

There was no objectificaton in the modern sense of the word. Prostitutes had a much higher social position than in the Christian world.

Many have written about this and analysed it to death since the mid 50s, some even made great Movies about Male and Female Prostitution, I do not recall the titles now, but they have been some very good Films from Germany, France and Italy about this even Japan has dealt with the subject in the 70s. Woman may have been victims in Anglo Saxons society for the past 3 centuries however it is not the case in all societies nor through out history. Even in the Roman Empire Woman held a rather powerful position.

If you study the history of Islam you will see that it was actually making a very positive impact in its society and at the time. It was about justice and fairness. Things have changed of course over time, in part due to such events has the Crusaders and the Colonies.

Why the knowledge of History and culture is very important, in order to keep things in perspective and a balanced view rather then falling into prejudice and extremes based on half truth giving us misleading and inaccurate finds.

Further generalizing Islam is not very objective nor scientific or intellectual. I have seen Islamic societies that are matriarchal such as the Tuaregs or the Berber. Same goes for Christian and even Atheist it is not cut and dry. Studying with out presumption nor per-judgements is important to achieve objectivity and find truth.

I can see the reasoning behind it, work and life stress and family obligations may leave little time to socialise outside, especially the time involved meeting Mr. or Ms, Right, sometimes both sexes just was to screw each others brains out with no pillow talk afterwards, and as American Express says "Priceless"!

Sounds like my perfect scenario, frankly!

I must say that men are built to re-produce until death if they are healthy. Just go to Thailand and witness the old fat guys from European countries and their sex habits. I am afraid to go any deeper into this minefield. no pun intended.lol

Thank you for article. The bartered exchange of services for goods has been around as long, if not longer, as recorded history. I see nothing wrong with it, as long as it between two (or more) consenting individuals, and if legalized would probably be fewer problems.

I agree with you - that person's body, that person's choice.

Women in positions of power (including money) have been partaking for years. Less women in power means more "notoriety" for men in this case.
