Word Of The Decade
It's that time again when we have to look back at the last ten years and assess what's happened. From the Y2K bug which never happened to 9/11. From Iraq to Afghanistan to the weapons of mass destruction which never were. From Bush to Obama.
The internet is always a good place to look for new technologies and it would be wrong to comment on the last decade as the internet decade. However, social networks such as Facebook and to an extent Twitter have defined the generation and the move from old school media to online perhaps like nothing else.
A current survey at YourOneWord has indicated that global warming and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq dominate the thoughts of most people. The question of course, is whether they dominate the thoughts of the next decade.

We Americans tend to be "Americancentric." We view the whole world through our own experiences. 9/11, two wars, Katrina, and the recession/depression dominate this decade. But what would dominate the minds of those in Darfur, Greenland, or Gaza.
Your headlines asks for the word of the decade. I wish the word of the decade could have been "peace," but we all know it is not.
If I had to chose one word for the decade it would be:
Reckoning
Environment: measure and address the possiblities of what the future will look like.
Global Economy: assess the rewards and penalities for action or inaction and the economic responsibilites countries have for integrated approaches.
World Peace: judge, consider and estimate actions on the international stage that will ultimately be responsible for and the savior of world peace.
Individual Responsibility: Each person assumes personal responsibility for their contributions to issues faced today, no matter how insignificant it might seem, and confront them locally and globally in a proactive way.

I doubt whether many people would choose the word reckoning but it's a very good choice !
