World population to top 7 billion in 2012

WASHINGTON -- World population will reach 7 billion in 2012, according to a new estimate released by the US Census Bureau Thursday.
The world population hit 6 billion in 1999 and another billion will be added to the total in only 13 years, the bureau said.
A reminder of the quick population growth is that the world's population even did not reach one billion in 1800.
The US Census Bureau attributed the growth to medical and nutritional advances in developing countries after World War II.
Nevertheless the latest projection shows that world population will grow at a slower pace during the first half of the 21st century than the latter half of the 20th century.
The world population doubled from 3 billion in 1959 to 6 billion in 1999, but is projected to increase by only 50 percent between 1999 and 2040.
Global population growth, about 1.2 percent per year, is projected to decline to 0.5 percent by 2050.
At the same time, the world population is growing older quickly.
The bureau estimated that by 2050, about 5 percent of the world 's population is projected to be 80 or older, in comparison with about 1.5 percent of the current global population is 80 or older.
It also projected that India will overtake China as the world's most populous nation by 2050.

Its going to be interesting to see how humanity will be able to sustain itself with our current exploitation of natural resources. Not to mention that this planet is running out of space.
Its just a ticking time bomb that politicians continue to ignore.

Since I describe myself as living in Asia since May '03 (rather then just traveling around), I tend to measure and compare cities through a foreigner's eye that lives
here.
This is a list of my Asian cities that are my favorite to live in:
I visited all, obviously, and in some I actually lived for a long period of time.
My rank is based on pleasure, comfort, ease and interest I found in them, as on the experience, humaneness of the locals.
A few explanations on my choices and ranking:
Bangkok, that is ranked on top, although, not having the highest standard of living but the combination of traditional Thai-Asian way of life with Asian modernization (in the right amount) create a fascinating sight for foreign eyes.
In China for example, most of the urban population is brutish, crude and vulgar.
Clearly that can't be true for all Chinese people living in cities, but it's true for the types I came across with.
Most Japanese cities are ranked high in my list, no need to explain too much about that one:
The friendliness, honestness and pleasantness of the Japanese people, as there integrity enrich and enhance the life of a foreigner out there.
Manila and Jakarta, although being public toilets both get a nice ranking.
Actually they are fun, easy going, cheap, English speaking, and give the foreigner full return on his expenses.
The Korean cities remind me of their Japanese cities by organization, infrastructure, looks, costs (even cheaper), comfort and spacing, but the locals I met were so grey, hollowed addicted to work, lifeless and serious.
It made me imagine in higher easiness the live in neighboring North Korea.
Coz all their better off financial situation (in south korea) is worthless if no pleasure, fun, or even a smile exists there.
Seoul and Busan are sad cities.

כמה הסברים על הדירוג:
בבנקוק, שמדורגת ראשונה איכות החיים אמנם לא הגבוהה ביותר, אבל השילוב של מסורת אסייתית (מהזוית התאית כמובן) והשילוב עם מודרניזציה אסייתית במידה הנכונה יוצרים שילוב מרתק לעיניים מערביות.
בסין לדוגמא, האוכלוסיה העירונית ברובה בהמית ובלתי אנושית בעליל.ולכן כל עריה תופסות את תחתית הרשימה ומתחרות בינם לבין עצמם על תואר העיר האיומה באסיה למגורים, לביקור, ולהתקשרות כלשהי עם סינים.
ערי יפן מדורגים גבוה ברשימה, כמעט כולם. אין צורך להסביר יותר מדיי מדוע.
חביבות, הוגנות ויושר המקומיים מעשירים ככ את החיים של זר ביפן.
מנילה וג'קרטה למרות הייותן בתי שימוש מקבלים מיקום מכובד ברשימה שלי, הן ערים מהנות, זולות, קלילות, פשוטות, דוברות אנגלית, ונותנות לזר תמורה מלאה לכספו.
ערי קוריאה דווקא דומות מאוד לערי יפן בסדר, מראה, תשתיות, רווחה, עלויות (קצת יותר זולות אפילו), ואפשרויות בילוי אבל המקומיים הם עם ככ אפור, חלול, משועבד לעבודה ורציני שגורם לי לדמיין ביתר קלות את החיים של אחיהם בפיונג יאנג בירת צפון קוריאה השכנה. וכל רווחתם הכלכלית בטלה בעיניי, כי הנאה -איין.

This was taken during the 2008 Race for the Cure in Raleigh, NC. There were over 25,000 people expected to be at this event which raised awareness for breast cancer. I was photographing the start of the largest race. The starting line was 1/4 of a mile from the entrance to Merredith College. It took 20-25 minutes from the start of the race until the last people left the campus.

Rock on the Range is an annual rock festival played at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH. Rock on the Range is one of the biggest rock festivals in the Midwest and displays some of the most popular bands in alternative rock, hard rock, and metal today. Rock on the Range is always in mid-May, and is most well-known for having the first Stone Temple Pilots performance in 7 years, ending the band's hiatus.[1]
The first annual Rock on the Range kicked off on May 19, 2007. The sold-out festival ran all day, beginning around noon and ending a little after 11:00 PM. Due to such success from the first Rock on the Range, the second festival turned into a 2-day event during the weekend of May 17-18, 2008. The annual festival usually draws around 40,000 fans into Columbus Crew Stadium. Two stages are set up: The Main Stage is inside the stadium at one end of the soccer field, and the Second Stage is in the parking lot just outside the stadium. A limited number of guests are allowed access to the field.
