President Pervez Musharraf became infamous for his refusal to hold a ballot last year and for putting leading political opponents, including ex-cricket star Imran Khan and the now late Benazir Bhutto under house arrest, and barring leading lawyers from the Supreme Courts .  The Minister for Information, Sherry Rehman, has given a strong message that Mr.Musharraf's resignation could be announced today (Sunday).

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Saturday said that President Pervez Musharraf should read the writing on the wall and step down; adding that doors of reconciliation have been closed to President Musharraf and he would be impeached.

She, however, said no trial outside the National Assembly would be held against the president. "President will be impeached and there is difference between trial and impeachment, impeachment is within parliament's authority, Sherry said while talking to the media after a meeting of the Senate Committee for information.

To a question about the charges against President Musharraf she said that charges against the president were solid and no foreign or internal mediation would be accepted for granting President Pervez Musharraf a safe passage. She said president would be provided opportunity to defend himself. She reiterated that charge-sheet against president would be presented in the lower house on Monday. Sherry said that government has undertaken impeachment of the president in order to save the country from uncertainty.
