Wyclef Jean May Run for President of Haiti

Wyclef Jean, famous for his charity work with Haiti as well as his music (both solo and with The Fugees) may run for President of his native country. According to Wyclef's family, a bid for the position, which runs for a five-year term, is in the cards, but a final decision is yet to be made.

One way or another, though, Wyclef will be involved in the November elections, if not as a candidate, then as an activist encouranging young people to vote. Politics in Haiti is a far more daunting prospect than in the US, though, as presidents tend to either get overthrown, assassinated or try to seize power indefinitely.

Indeed, current President Rene Préval (the only Haitian leader so far to actually complete a legal term as President) cannot legally seek another term, but has so far refused to replace the electoral council, which has been accused of corruption.

Wyclef Jean's charity, Yele Haiti, has been extremely active in relief efforts following the massive earthquake that destroyed Port-au-Prince, but was scrutinized for financial irregularities.

To enter the race, Jean would have to prove he has resided in Haiti for five consecutive years, own property in the country and have never been a citizen of any country other than Haiti.
