This is not about breaking up, it's not about separating. We can continue to share things where that makes sense.
SNP Deputy Leader Nicola Sturgeon

A campaign aiming for the people of Scottland to support Scottish independence with a 'yes' vote is to begin today.

Being launched in Edinburgh the campaign will be lead by the Scottish National Party.

The vote on Scotland's future in the United Kingdom may not happen until 2014 but the campaining is starting and will include other political parties like the Scottish Greens, well known Scottish celebrities and businesses.

Scotland's Deputy First Minister and SNP Deputy Leader Nicola Sturgeon spoke to BBC Radio 4's Today programme and said: "This is not about breaking up, it's not about separating. We can continue to share things where that makes sense.

"But independence puts powers over our economy, over our political life into the hands of the people of Scotland."

A campaign on supporting the union between Scotland and the rest of the Kingdom will start later in the year.

It will include well known polititions like Alistair Darling will be led by the Labour party, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

It is not exactly an auspicious start for Alex Salmond. Today, as Scotland’s First Minister launches his campaign to bring to an end the Union between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the forthcoming referendum, an opinion poll reveals that he faces an uphill struggle.

The reassuring news for those – including this newspaper – who believe resolutely in the maintenance of this most successful alliance between two former enemies is that the survey finds that the overwhelming majority of Scottish people believe their country should remain part of Britain.
