Stepmom of Missing NC Girl Deemed Flight Risk

The Missing Girl's Leg Was Found Last Week

Police confirmed today that the prosthetic leg they found off a road in North Carolina last week did belong to missing Zahra Clare Baker. The leg was found in an area where her step-mother used to live and police were able to match the serial number on the leg to the number assigned to the little girl.

"Medical records obtained from Australia where the prosthetic leg was originally fitted matched the serial number on the leg," police said in a news release. "A scanner was used to extract the serial number from a transponder placed inside the prosthesis."

They are already investigating Zahra's death as a homicide, after no one can confirm seeing the girl since September 25, but she was not reported missing until October 9.

She lost her leg to bone cancer at age 5 and then suffered from lung cancer a few years later.

Her step-mother Elisa Baker is currently in jail, after being charged with obstruction for justice for writing a bogus ransom note, and her father Adam Baker was also arrested for submitting worthless checks and failing to appear in court.

The search continues, but many are saying they fear the worse for what may have happened to this little girl.
