There is always that dysfunctional couple. From the moment they set eyes on each other, their interaction has always been tumultuous, enemies with benefits, its a relationship that was dead on arrival. The neighbors hear them fight and bicker over issues that stretch from finances to accusations of infidelity, a bitter existence that often leaves one battered and the other bruised. The caring intervene, moments of arbitration that inspire resolutions that later on become nothing more that the remains of unfulfilled and broken promises.

And so if Zimbabwe is the home, then we the citizens are the children caught in the sometimes violent crossfire and turmoil conjured up by this dysfunctional and unhappy marriage we call the ‘Unity Government’. Opposition ministers get arrested while army generals issue threats, tainted diamonds get sold while another Zimbabwean gets stoned to death in neighboring South Africa, civil liberties and individual freedoms are defecated upon while thugs spread fear with impunity, hard workers slave for pennies while the big wigs rob a nation of millions. Indeed, it’s a marriage of convenience, one that caters to the violent and corrupt (ZANU), one that plays to the convenience of those that want to look away (SADC, Europe, US), one that accommodates the sluggishness of the inept (MDC) and one that caters to the ignorance of the complacent (Me and You).

Sincerely yours,

Kwapi
