Zimbabwe Teacher's go on Strike

Amnesty International has issued a statement in which they outline the plight of teachers in Zimbabwe, stating that they continue to be subjected to harassment and intimidation.

During Zimbabwe's last election, teachers were singled out as perceived supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change, the political party that was then in opposition, or as a result of their affiliation to the Progressive Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ).

The PTUZ recorded the deaths of seven teachers affiliated to the union and the harassment, intimidation and even torture of more than 60 other members.

Many teachers were forced to take refuge in urban areas or in neighbouring countries such as Botswana and South Africa, driven from their work places by security forces, and other ZANU-PF supporters, including veterans of Zimbabwe's war of independence.

Elections are scheduled to take place in 2010 and teachers are again expected to be targets of government sponsored violence.

Teachers work so hard all across the world, for them to be singled out as anything but hard working, dedicated people, is ridiculous.

As I was saying last night, where is the Spanish magistrate or the Dutch magistrate or whoever to prosecute these torture offenses?

Not even Nelson Mandela has spoken out against Robert Mugabe.

Truly pitiful.

Yes what is it about Robert Mugabe that makes him so fearful? I've often wondered this myself at the risk of sounding ignorant of the matter. I can only suppose that due to his track record, if anyone speaks against him, the poor people of Zimbabwe will suffer and will suffer terribly as he controls everything, and no one wants to cause more burtality to the Zimbabwe people.

A dreadful state the country is in, and the world does nothing.

If there was any country in the world that another nation should step in and put it's leaders out of power, Zimbabwe would be top of the list.

So sad.

It seems there are more crazy, brutal people now than decent ones.  The scales have been tipped for quite a while due to the population explosion.  Can we ever police the world when we can't police  enough here.

Still no matter what this country is safer to live in for now.

There are a lot of troublespots in the world.  We in Canada and US live in relatively safe societies.  I can.t believe all the human right violations around the world that remain unanswered.
