The missing Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, Zoltan Tombol, was found dead in Riverside County by rescue workers. The cause of death was not released yet, but investigators said no foul play was suspected. Autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday.
UPDATE (Oct. 27, 2009): The Riverside County coroner's office ruled Tombol's death a suicide. Medical examiner said Tombol had killed himself with a shotgun wound to his head. Toxicology reports will not be available for another 4 to 8 weeks.
Zoltan Tombol's wife reported him missing on Sunday after he failed to pick up his son. He was last seen on Sunday morning.
More than 100 were involved in the search effort. They found the body on Monday at 2:20 pm.
Tombol had served as law-enforcement officer for 19 years, and a former member of the elite 82nd Airborne Army Division. He was an outdoors person who was in a great shape.
"This is all under investigation, and all of this will be looked at from top to bottom, and when it's appropriate, if they can they will release further information," Whitmore said. "It's a sad day for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. We've lost a 19-year veteran, a valued member of our family."

A damn shame. One of the finest people I have worked with in over 20 years. Another one of those great people that gave 110%. Everytime we lose one it hurts a little more. I hope he rests in peace. I'll miss you, "Z".......many will.

It's really sad to hear this... I knew Mr Tombol because he brought his dog Dallas to my work for grooming. He was always smiling and knew a few of us really well, because he was such a loyal customer. He was just a beautiful person inside and out. He was always interested in others and had a very giving heart. Even though I only knew him threw work, I know everyone is missing him and he will always be in our hearts. I will never forget Mr Tombol and I'm sure all of those who's lives he touched will never forget him either. RIP much love... You'll be very missed.

Just a few days before this happened, I was thinking of getting back in shape and trekking the Himalayas. I thought of my high school english teacher who had traveled this region and almost immediately thought of buddy Zolton. I met Zolton in High School Senior English class with Mrs. Pencall, and he was one of the smartest, nicest guys I knew. I'll never forget an English paper I had trouble writing, I ended up getting a "C" and was so proud of myself....Zolton sat right across from me and said "Its okay MaryAnn, you'll do better next time"....I laughed and told him that was my best. He was always encouraging and very sincere. My deepest condolences to his family. I am so sorry for your loss.

This is all too sad...tears roll down my face while writing this. I met mR. Zoltan Tombol as a troubled teen in Temple city High School. He was one of the very few pweson in my entire life who took the time to really get to know me and attempt to take an understanding approach towards looking behind the reason I was acting out the way I was. I never ever forget the one on one encouraging talk he gave me in the school office that I carry with me to this day..he really reached me and I felt understood in a way I never had before...I waish I could of had the opportunity to ofter that back to you...whatever it was that was weighing you down is knocked of by your wings because you are truel an angel. I am now a youth specialist myself helping those who are walking down in the pattern I have left behind..and I would like to give thanks to you getting me there god bless you and your family.

My family and I are so very sad to hear this news. We had the pleasure of meeting Zolton Tombol many years ago when he coached our sons t-ball team. He left a very wondferful and lasting impression on us with his very warm and authentic personality. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Debbie, his son Zack as well as with the rest of his family. May he now rest in peace.

Dep (Z) Tombol was one of my force instructors @ the LASD academy. He was always so pleasant and patience w/us. Seemed like a great man who loved his family. His wife was one of my D.I.s Always had nothing but good thoughts about them. Our class is shocked and very saddened by this. I was fortunate to have attended the funeral and saw D.Tombol & their son. Words cannot express how I felt at the time.

My name is Mac. I was stationed in Italy with Zoltan in the same platoon, Aco. 3/325th ABCT. He and I used to go to the Italian judo club across the street from post. I and all our other 82nd buddies that knew him are shocked to hear about the details (what little there are) of his death. It just doesn't make sense. Every since I read about the autopsy finding I have been in a daze. I mean it just doesn't add up. Now granted, I haven't seen him in nineteen years, but you kind of get a feel for how a man will react to certain situations. I don't know what demons he came across since then, but they must have been powerful. Our prayers are with him and his family. He was one hell of great guy. Rest in peace my brother.
Mac
