PARIS (AP) - A fire raced through an apartment building in Paris on Friday killing at least 17 people and injuring 22 others, two of them seriously, firefighters said.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight at a building in southeastern Paris, the fire department said. About 210 firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.

The fire occurred in a run-down building inhabited by immigrant workers. Of the 17 people killed, 14 were children. Most of the deaths occurred on the fifth floor, as a result of intense heat and fumes. There were no electric lines or gas mains where the fire began and police believe it was started purposefully.

My God. That sounds horrific. Did you witness it? Were they letting people report on it or was the area marked off?
